USMLE Step 1 Question of the Day brings users a unique way to prepare for the immense Step 1 exam. Featuring a daily question and explanation, this app is an affordable weapon in your arsenal against your looming exam.
The name of this app, from Learn From Apps, quite accurately sums up its features: It brings medical students who are studying for their Step 1 exam a daily question to test their exam readiness and help them master it.
This question is randomly selected out of any of the topics covered in the exam (which covers the first two years of medical school in the United States).
Once an answer is selected and submitted, the app then gives users the correct answer along with an explanation; explanations for the reasoning behind why the other answers are incorrect are also provided.
Additionally, students can choose to mark certain questions to save them to a “favorites” list or to review any questions that they might have previously missed. Finally, information regarding the percentage of other students who got the daily question correct is also provided.
As a whole, I was pleased with the features of this app; the questions and answer explanations are well written. However, as a second year student studying to take the Step 1 exam myself, I felt like some of the questions in this app were surprisingly easy compared to the questions in the q-banks of some other Step 1 preparation resources.
Appearance and Layout:
This app is designed in such a way that no complaints can really be made about its layout. It’s easy to use, and figuring out how to navigate through the app to access your favorite questions, missed questions, or percentages on topics is easy to do as well.
USMLE Question of the Day is a simplistically designed app, but this simplicity keeps the layout clean and very user-friendly. Even though both question stems and answer explanations are very lengthy, the font used in the app was always perfectly readable, even on small screen sizes.
With a price tag of almost $4, USMLE Step 1 Question of the Day runs on the pricier side of general apps. However, this app is still comparatively “affordable” when compared to the educational app industry as a whole.
It offers a friendly format with simplicity that will appeal to many, and the well written explanations to the questions makes this app a very informative one.
At the same time, most students who are preparing for Step 1 are quick to remark that their greatest difficulty in preparing for the exam is not necessarily a lack of study materials; they are more likely to complain about a lack of time to actually make use of all the resources available.
With this in mind, USMLE Step 1 Question of the Day will appeal to anyone who likes to have a quick daily question to review between classes and is a great way to augment those long continuous study periods.
Finally, according to the developer, “Rohit Gosain, M.D. Founder and CEO is currently leading multiple upcoming projects alongside Rahul Gosain, M.D. Co-Founder and President at Learn From Apps, so stay tuned to ‘Learn on the go!'”.
USMLE Step 1 Question of the Day requires iOS 7.0 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
