Catching up on the news is often a daily ritual, but nowadays it’s not exactly something we tend to look forward to seeing as so many bad things are going on in the world.

Headliner is wonderfully creative app that brings humor and satire to the news. It lets users watch funny and original news clips uploaded by fellow newsreaders. If you’re a fan of The Daily Show, this is the app for you.

Concept and Functionality:

As someone who has tried tons of different news apps, I was excited to see what Headliner, developed by Oh Say Nation llc, had to offer.

Signing up is easy and you can do so by either linking the app with Facebook or using your email address. Headliner lets you follow broadcasters so you can keep up with your favorite personalities.

At first glance Headliner looks like a regular social networking app with a news-centric focus. The main screen features a long list of recent headlines, along with the broadcasters that have commented on them.

I do want to mention that the main news screen is an eclectic blend of headlines and there’s no easy way to filter by news category. I don’t think this is necessarily a bad thing, though, because you can easily breeze past headlines you’re not interested in.

Headliner requires broadcasters to share their sense of humor with the rest of the world, and the short 25 second video clips are often humorous. To me it feels more like watching late-night monologues to make the news a little more lighthearted.

Along with offering strong social networking capabilities, Headliner presents users with the unique opportunity to broadcast the news themselves.

All you have to do is create a short 25 second clip using the built-in feature, give your clip a title, and optionally share it to Facebook and Twitter. The clip will be reviewed and you could possibly be featured as a broadcaster in main headlines.

Headliner also features push notification alerts so you can stay up-to-date on breaking news when it happens. I wouldn’t necessarily rely on the app is your go to news source, but it’s definitely helpful for getting different perspectives on events.

Headliner can be downloaded from the App Store for free and is designed for iPhone. There are no in-app purchases or ads, which is definitely a plus.

As far as overall thoughts on the app, I believe Headliner is great for keeping up with news in a humorous way.

Do keep in mind that it is by no means a solid news source, but that shouldn’t stop you from treating yourself to humorous clips by fellow newsreaders around the world.
