FineScanner – scan and recognize multipage documents in PDF or JPG
iPhone App Review by TheiPhoneAppReview.com
FineScanner is an amazing app that makes creating digital copies of paper documents easier than ever before.
Offered for free through the iTunes Store, FineScanner is a quick and convenient way to create digital copies, make text in images editable, and share your work.
Like its name suggests, FineScanner, by ABBYY, is an app that allows users to quickly scan and save documents via their iOS devices. Since the “autofocus” camera feature is necessary for ensuring quality scans, FineScanner is really not recommended for iOS devices that lack this technology (such as the iPad 1 or 2).
However, for devices that are capable of autofocusing, this app lets you scan and save any text instantly. Unlike many other scanning services, FineScanner goes above and beyond the capabilities of most other apps.
Specifically, FineScanner auto captures page boundaries and corrects for color and angle distortions. Other impressive features of this app include a “best shot” option that automatically selects the clearest image out of three, and the option to save your documents in just about any of your already existing cloud storage spots–from Evernote to Dropbox.
You can add to the base features of FineScanner through in-app purchases if desired.
We were very impressed with how easy this app was to use and had no problem at all getting it to clearly image our test documents.
Appearance and Layout:
“Basic” would probably be the best way to describe the appearance of FineScanner. The features of the app are really the most impressive part; there are no “bells and whistles” thrown into the design of the app to make it more visually pleasing.
Still, the functionality of the layout of FineScanner gives you nothing to really complain about; navigating through this app is completely intuitional, even though it’s appearance is nothing to write home about.
In our view the simple design is actually a benefit since it lets you easily focus on the task at hand.
As mentioned above, FineScanner is a free app. It’s easy to use, and if you ever need to make digital copies of paper documents, it’s definitely a handy app to have around and an excellent addition to your app library.
The BookScan functionality is only available with a Premium Account although scanning entire books is probably not the ideal use of this app. Anyone who does use FineScanner to copy book pages, however, will no doubt be quite pleased with how it automatically separates facing pages and corrects for distortions and lighting anomalies.
It’s obvious that the developers have put a lot of work into improving this app over the last three years and the result is an excellently designed app that does exactly what it promises to do.
FineScanner requires iOS 8.0 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
