If you use a heavy duty project management tool like Microsoft Project 2010 or 2013, chances are you’ve wanted to view project files away from your computer.

SPViewer is a slick app that lets iPhone and iPad users easily view project files on their device, including Apple Watch.

Concept and Functionality:

One thing I really want to stress about SPViewer, from developer Seavus DOOEL, is the fact that it does not allow you to edit project files. The app only allows you to view them, which is still handy for accessing files on the go. I also want to mention that the app only works with files using the standard Microsoft Project file extension “.mpp”.

When it comes to navigation, I found SPViewer to be very easy to navigate and understand. It’s fairly simple and straightforward, and new users are greeted with a brief overview screen when they first open the app that details pretty much everything it offers.

When viewing project files, SPViewer allows you to manipulate data in a variety of ways. This includes being able to toggle data views, easily access project info, zoom in and out of tables, and much more. I really like the fact that everything is easy to view even on a small screen like my iPhone 5.

Features:

Even though SPViewer is strictly a project viewer for Microsoft Project files, the app offers quite a few features for users who are heavily reliant on the software. One of the features that really stands out is the ability to open .mpp files directly from email. Very handy.

Perhaps the best feature it offers, though, is the ability to sync with your OneDrive for Business account in order to easily access files.

SPViewer lets you track progress on your Apple Watch and also features a long list of sample files for new users who are interested in seeing exactly what the app is capable of.

However, filenames are generic (Sample1.mpp, Sample2.mpp etc.) and I think it would be much more helpful if sample filenames were more descriptive.

Value:

SPViewer is available to download from the App Store for free and is universally compatible with iPhone and iPad, as well as Apple Watch. The app does require a subscription in order to view your own Microsoft Project files. Subscriptions are handled via an-app purchase and range from 1 month for $1.99 to 12 months for $9.99.

Overall, SPViewer is a highly functional app that allows Microsoft Project users to easily view files away from their computer. This tool is great if you’re just looking for a way to access and view your Project files.

I’m using the desktop version of Seavus Project Viewer as well, and the developers are doing great job. It looks like you are working in MS Project…highly recommended!!
