If you’re like us, you spend a lot of time in coffee shops. Whether for work or just to get out and relax a bit, it seems like we’re constantly sitting in front of a wooden table while a pack of hipsters talks about . . . well, whatever.
This is all well and good, but there are times when you need to block out the third Mumford and Sons song today, or that conversation happening next door.
Considering how effectively UrbanDenoiser blocks or receives input from the audible world around you, we guarantee it’s worth your time.
Concept and Functionality
Essentially, the app tries to help you block out the rest of the world, or choose to let it through the door when the opportunity arises.
How does it do this? Through magic of automatic noise cancellation!
To start the process, boot the app, plug in your headphones, and then let it do a bit of calibration.
UrbanDenoiser will “listen” to your surroundings using the information it gathers to determine a base level for activity. Then, once you’re ready, just start playing music!
Pick the listening mode you want, and UrbanDenoiser will do the rest. Use the “denoiser” mode to totally cancel out the interference.
As the flagship service here, noise cancellation works surprisingly well. We found it very effective, no matter how loud our surroundings might be.
The other two modes are just as useful, though perhaps less so than the former. “Natural” will temporarily return the world to normal, while “Noise Around” will let you dig into your immediate bubble for audio support.
Design and Graphics
UrbanDenoiser is a very simple application, which tends to work in its favor. The interface actually reminds us a lot of Robinhood—our current Best Designed Application (patent pending). It’s pleasing to the eye, and presents you with all the necessaries at no time delay.
In fact, our only real complaint with UrbanDenoiser is the fact that it only works with your iTunes library.
For those that use the service, this is fantastic. For guys like me who are heavy into Spotify, this is a bit of a bummer. One solution for this would be for Spotify to support Apple’s Inter-App Audio.
The app also provides a “hearing test” mode that lets you, according to the developers, “get the high quality of sound perfectly adapted to your hearing abilities.”
Aside from all the audio magic, it’s incredibly well-designed, and we can hardly knock it for looks.
If this sounds like something you would use often, then by all means: go ahead and snag it today. You won’t be disappointed—pretty far from it, in fact.
All together, UrbanDenoiser represents a unique and functional solution to a common problem.
If this is something you’ve been hankering for, but have yet to discover, UrbanDenoiser is your guy. With sleek looks, a fair price-tag (free) and incredible features, there’s really no downside.
UrbanDenoiser requires iOS 8.0 or later. Compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. This app is optimized for iPhone 5. A small expedite fee was paid to speed up the publication of this review.
