Zoom Social – Get real-time, local buzz from Twitter with trending pictures
iPhone App Review by TheiPhoneAppReview.com
Zoom Social is a great app to keep up with what’s going on around the world in terms of social media. Developed by Locus Social Inc, this handy social media app lets you see what’s trending around the world, from your timezone to your backyard.
Concept and Functionality:
Zoom Social is like having an eye on everything that’s trending on social media. Instead of having to check out trending topics via Twitter, you can quickly and easily see what’s going on with a shake of your wrist.
Users can browse trending photos, words, and even username mentions. Tapping on one of the bottom categories twice reveals a variety of settings for users to fine tune their Zoom Social experience. This includes zooming to a specific address, changing map styles, and displaying points of interest and buildings.
Are the photos and topics really trending? Since the app analyzes 20M tweets and 2 trillion US regions to show most trending topics, pictures and mentions, you can bet these are trending.
If you can move past the feeling that you’re somewhat stalking people on social media, Zoom Social is a pretty nifty app to use. However, I’m not a huge fan of the fact that you can essentially pinpoint tweets right down to the address they were sent from.
Instead, I wish tweets could be grouped by a central location such as a city or neighborhood so no one would have to worry about their actual location being shared with strangers. Although to be fair, they’re not creating the location data, they’re simply using the location data that’s already available.
Currently Zoom Social aggregates data from Twitter, but the developers are planning on including Instagram, Pinterest, and Facebook data in the near future. This will definitely add a quite of bit of variety to Zoom Social in the sort of information that’s aggregated to the app.
Also, Zoom Social allows users to tweet photos within the app. There’s even a built-in photo editor that allows you to add various effects, frames, and other goodies. Personally I was surprised to see just how comprehensive the photo editor is, and I wish the app would emphasize this feature more.
You can even quickly create memes, which is usually a feature people have to pay for in other apps.
Zoom Social is available to download from the App Store for free and is designed for iPhone. If you’re interested in browsing current trends on twitter, Zoom Social definitely serves this purpose.
However, as I mentioned before, Zoom Social can essentially pinpoint users right down to their street address, which can definitely lead to privacy issues. Integrating a way to strip tweets down to neutral locations such as cities, counties, or neighborhoods would be perfect, as users would be far more protected. That, or limiting how far users can zoom in on tweets would solve this problem.
Zoom Social requires iOS 7.0 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. This app is optimized for iPhone 5, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus. A small expedite fee was paid to speed up the publication of this review.
