It is never easy to give a speech to a large group of people. It’s even harder to give a televised—or otherwise broadcasted—performance. If you’re not a professional with nerves of steel, you’re likely looking for every tool imaginable to get you through your next engagement. If that’s the case, let us help you out a little by introducing PromptSmart, from the company, PromptSmart.

PromptSmart is an ingenious app for any would-be public speaker. The application offers a minimalist way to read what you’ve prepared, deliver it all smoothly, and without any other device beside your iPhone or iPad. It’s a little pricy, but easily worth the money invested.

Concept and Functionality

Primarily, PromptSmart is designed to give you maximum confidence and speaking ability when you most need it—without using any other devices than the one currently in your pocket. How does it do this? Through a menagerie of cutting-edge features, all of which worked surprisingly well on our iPhone.

Firstly, PromptSmart provides an easy way to present your speeches in a concise, teleprompter-esque fashion. Simply upload your documents in a variety of easy formats, and the app will do the rest. It puts all that messy verbiage over a flat background with a text color of your choice. It looks exactly like a classic prompter, only it’s a perfect fit for your iOS device.

Secondly, PromptSmart comes with something called VoiceTrack, which we haven’t seen anywhere else in the iTunes App Store. This technology allows you to start reading while PromptSmart follows along. It will actually listen to your voice, and adjust the displayed text to match.

This is useful for a number of reasons, but primarily it keeps you from having to worry about page flips or scrolling. Just start reading your own words, and the rest takes care of itself! To us, that’s easily worth the price of admission, especially for the frequent speaker.

Design and Interface

PromptSmart also happens to look pretty fantastic on the iPhone and iPad alike. It features a pseudo-minimalist interface with some flat influence that we like a lot. Not only that, but it comes with two unique interface modes.

The first is a standard document rendering, as we talked about before. Load a speech into the application and you’re done. The second allows you to add shorter notecards for presentations in the board room or elsewhere.

We like all of this, and our only real complaint is that it’s not quite as seamlessly animated as other apps in the App Store. We’d like to see some soft parallax, or even some gliding between interface elements.

Overall Value

PromptSmart is also on the pricier end of the stick, costing a whopping $9.99 in the App Store. However, that’s a pretty small price to pay for those that speak often, and would find a lot of value in just a presentation app.

This is a sharp looking utility with far-reaching potential. And though the bill is higher than most, it’s easily worth the cost of admission. PromptSmart earns a solid rating from us, as well as a tip of the hat.

PromptSmartPromptSmart requires iOS 7.0 or later. Compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. This app is optimized for iPhone 5. A small expedite fee was paid to speed up the publication of this review.
