If you have ever tried to learn a language, or even just perfect your accent, you know how hard it is to pick up on the tiny subtleties that give you away as a non-native. How do you beat this? It’s simple! Take samples of audio, and then loop the portions you’re missing over, and over, and over—and over.

The best way to get this done on the iPhone? Turns out, it’s an application called Utterize, from Alexey Zamiatin. We love how simple the app is to use, as well as how effective it is at scrubbing audio en minutiae. And if you’re looking for this kind of solution, our full review of Utterize is contained below.

Concept and Functionality

We’ve mentioned Utterize’s primary market already: those who are primarily trying to improve their pronunciation. However, the concepts at work behind Utterize can be applied to a lot of areas.

Here’s how the thing works: you load any item from your iPod library into Utterize and it automatically scans it to produce a waveform. For those that aren’t audio-inclined, that’s the scribbly wavy bits that actually make up the audio. From there, you can do what’s called a scrub: That means running through the sound beat by beat.

When you find an area you’d like to focus on, you simple drag the blue bars to either side of it, and then hit play. And that’s it!

Let’s say you’re working hard on rolling your Rs in Spanish. If you can’t get it, download some football match audio. Find a section where there’s a nice, long trill, and then highlight it. From there, as the directions themselves tell us to do, repeat that sound loudly. It’s quick, effective and could not be simpler here with Utterize at the wheel.

Design and Interface

It also helps that Utterize looks as good as it does. The application is extremely sleek, almost spartanly so. When you boot it up, you’ll see all of your tracks. Tap on the one you want to use, and then Utterize will load up our scrubber. From there, it’s all touchy, touchy feely goodness. It’s hardly a challenge to get to the audio you need, and even less of an issue to loop it once you’re there.

All in all, Utterize is not the prettiest application we’ve ever seen on the iPhone or iPad. But then again, it is very far from the ugliest. That earns it some points in our book!

Overall Value

Do we want to spend $3.99 on any application? Usually not. This is because we firmly believe in the $0.99 sweet-spot. But, considering there are no other comparable utilities to Utterize in the App Store, much less ones that look this good and work this well, the price is easily worth it.

If you’re eager to have a scrubber application like this on your iPhone or iPad, the four dollar price tag is well-worth paying. All in all, Utterize earns four and a half stars, as well as our recommendation.

UtterizeUtterize requires iOS 7.0 or later. Compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. This app is optimized for iPhone 5. A small expedite fee was paid to speed up the publication of this review.
