Every now and then, a game wanders into the App Store and displays a truly staggering level of genius. It’s inventive, it’s wildly fun to play, and it’s so simple we’re stunned we didn’t come up with it first. Very few applications fit this quite like Ridiculous Fishing, from Vlambeer.
The game is utterly . . . well, ridiculous. It is also endearing, addictive and a mainstay on our iPhone. We play no other title more than it. If you’re wondering why then you’ve come to the right place: You’ll find our full review of Ridiculous Fishing below.
Concept and Gameplay
As you might have surmised from the title, Ridiculous Fishing is not a straight-laced kind of game. It has you playing the role of a man in a boat (usually with a trucker cap), shooting away at fish drudged out from the bottom of the ocean. But that oversimplifies things.
To get fish, you’ll need to sink your lure down to the furthest depths possible. This involves dodging obstacles and critters on the way down to obtain a maximum dive. You get only so many strikes at this, and when they’re all gone, your bait goes rocketing to the surface.
Now you need to spear as many fish as you can. You do this by simply running into them, tilting the iPhone back and forth to direct the bob. Once they’re all at the surface, they’re hurled into the air—and the fun begins.
Blast the fish with your favorite purchased weapons, rockets, powerups and other assorted goodies. Each burst fish gives you more money to buy more stuff, and on-and-on. It’s utterly silly, totally fun, and displayed in a way that’s lively and endearing.
It is also incredibly addictive. You have been warned.
Design and Graphics
Ridiculous Fishing truly would not be what it is without its graphics. They’re uniquely retro, but not quite 8-bit. Either way, they’re original and fun. They give the game a sort of levity that it needs. After all, something as graphic as shooting fish out of the air with a bazooka would be incredibly morbid and grotesque without spritely graphics.
We appreciate that the controls are simple: Tilt the iPhone to steer, tap to do everything else. This is the sort of title you can learn to play in minutes, but must spend hours (and hours, and hours, and hours) playing to master.
At the end of the day, we don’t just like Ridiculous Fishing, we absolutely adore it. It has a special place in our hearts that few other apps will ever have. It’s on the same pedestal as Angry Birds and Doodle Jump. And for that, we are thankful.
Ridiculous Fishing gets a well-earned five out of five, as well as our heavy recommendation. It is the creme of the crop in current arcade titles for the iPhone and iPad.
Ridiculous Fishing requires iOS 5.1 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch.
