Concept and Gameplay:
I have to admit that I’m a big fan of games that are simple. For me, complicated and intricate games belong on your computer or console of choice, not your small-screened iPhone.
Boom Cat is such a pleasure to play, and perhaps that’s why. The goal of the game is to launch your Knievel kitty into the air and help him fly as far as possible.
To start, simply aim your cat cannon by dragging it with your finger. Once you’re in position, you can tap or swipe your finger to launch Boom Cat into the sky. As you approach bombs, get ready to swipe your finger upward so your kitty can catch some air.
There are a few different bombs you’ll encounter, from basic black bombs to brownish bombs which propel your cat through the sky at a significantly increased rate of speed.
The only issue I encountered while playing Boom Cat was the fact that I literally had no idea what to do when I first started playing it. The lack of a tutorial or demonstration made the first few moments of gameplay a bit of a struggle, so I think the addition of a brief and informative animation or instruction screen would remedy the issue.
Seeing as Boom Cat is a fairly simple and basic game to play, it doesn’t come with flashy features like hundreds of levels or different modes. I’m a bit on the fence about this, mainly because I believe the game would be the perfect candidate for achievements and a global leaderboard. You can, however, share your score with the world via Facebook and Twitter, but unfortunately Boom Cat doesn’t include Game Center integration.
Another feature that I think would be pretty neat is the ability to customize your Boom Cat experience using powerups and upgrades that are earned from playing the game.
Though this might make Boom Cat fairly similar to other distance games like Flight!, I think it would add a bit more to the game itself in terms of overall gameplay and working toward goals.
Boom Cat is available to download from the App Store for $0.99 and is designed for iPhone. While its simplicity is a bit of a double-edged sword, I do believe that the game itself is fun and entertaining to play. Hopefully the developers release an update in the future to include Game Center support and perhaps add achievements.
Boom Cat requires iOS 5.1 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. This app is optimized for iPhone 5.
