Even when you know you want to buy that top or those shoes, sometimes you want a second opinion. Though you can ask friends, family or significant others about whether something looks good or not, what should you do when they’re not around?
No, you don’t need to pay someone to be your friend for a day. Instead, you can download FittingRoom – Fashion Advice, a free app from FittingRoom, that lets you give, share and receive fashion advice from everyone in the community.
Concept and Functionality:
FittingRoom takes the concept of asking others for their fashion advice, and brings it to mobile. Hence, there couldn’t be a more perfect name than “FittingRoom” for this app, a nod to where most of these discussions usually take place.
The main feed in the app is similar to an Instagram feed, with photos showing up one by one while scrolling. But unlike a simple photo-scrolling feed, there are a couple of elements that Fitting Room has that most don’t.
At the top, where you usually pull down to refresh, there is a search bar that lets you filter brands, styles and people in the feed. This is a helpful feature, since the feed is made up of all posts from everyone in the community, so if things get a tad overwhelming, you can always narrow things down.
Another cool feature is that you can upvote or downvote outfits or items straight from the photo — and right after you vote, you’ll be able to see what the rest of the community thinks.
If you find that you’re a fan of a user on FittingRoom, you can always opt to follow him or her. On the other hand, if a user is looking for advice on his or her outfit, there’s a handy camera icon that pops up on the side so you can take a photo of your reaction or of an item that you think would go well with a user-generated outfit post.
To make things a little easier on you, FittingRoom allows you to make a login through either Facebook or Instagram, and doesn’t request very much information, so you can stay as anonymous (or completely public) about yourself as you want.
You’ll also be happy to find that the user interface in this app is really easy to use. It’s simple to get from place to place within the app, just one swipe left and a handy side navigation is revealed, where you can look up your connections, adjust your notifications and even watch the tutorial for FittingRoom. However, since the app is so intuitive, you probably won’t have to watch it anyway.
FittingRoom helps to answer questions like “Does this make me look fat?” or “What do you think of this?” in a way that’s respectable and also insightful. The lack of comments within the app might seem like a bad idea, but it actually helps to create a more positive community.
The rating feature within the app makes FittingRoom all the more addicting. When I first tried out FittingRoom, I didn’t really think much of it at first. But the more outfits I decided to rate, the more I realized how fun it was.
After about a couple of minutes, I looked at my profile and found that I had scrolled through more than 40 outfits!
So what are you waiting for? FittingRoom is fun for all ages and genders, and you’ll never have to feel like you have to make a fashion decision on your own when you have a whole community ready to give you advice.
Fitting Room requires iOS 6.0 or later. Compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. This app is optimized for iPhone 5. A small expedite fee was paid to speed up the publication of this review.
