For those of us that follow the news, we know that the NSA scandal was one of the largest to rock the American capital in quite a long time. The exposure of the US Government and their massive data and information collection efforts reinforced an Orwellian notion that Big Brother isn’t just watching, he’s also listening and taking notes.
Now, people of all types are fighting back. Whether it’s the controversial Edward Snowden, protestors in DC, or app developers, lots of people have rallied together in an effort to reclaim our rights to privacy and protection.
With this in mind, we present to you a new app, SecuText, from iMKapps. This app helps to encrypt and encode text messages and ensures that what you send, won’t wind up on Obama’s desk.
This app works with iMessage, WhatsApp (recently purchased by Facebook for an astounding $19 Billion USD) and email. Encryption occurs locally on your iPhone or iPad and allows for secure encryption algorithms with military grade 1024 bit asymmetric keys intended to keep your messages private.
While the US Government has promised to re-examine their collection of data, this app begs the question, “Why leave something to chance?” SecuText allows you to take the power back, and enables you a seamless and free (during eval period) way to encode your messages and ensure your privacy.
Note that SecuText is only free during an evaluation period that stops after having received 25 messages. Then it’s still possible to send messages, but to receive new messages a one-time only In-App Purchase of $0.99 is required. Thankfully no banners will be shown at any time.
Ultimately, this app is simple and syncs instantly with your pre-existing contacts. Simply send an invite to your friends, and once they have SecuText too, you are certainly in the clear.
Concept and Functionality:
The app runs smoothly and looks great. With the most recent update occurring just this week, and a weight of merely 1.7 MB, this app makes privacy a breeze. It opens in a heartbeat, sends messages in just about the same time as a normal text, and boasts a smooth interface.
The developer does warn that encrypted messages can be longer and carry more data than a typical text, but that’s just about the only asterisk with this fantastic app.
The times they are a changing, and it’s up to us to keep up. Apps like SecuText prove that citizens can keep up with governments and challenge the methods of data collection and privacy in the modern age.
This app will keep you secure whenever messaging, and is absolutely free to evaluate. We applaud SecuText for this ambitious and marvelously constructed app.
SecuText requires iOS 6.0 or later. Compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. This app is optimized for iPhone 5. A small expedite fee was paid to speed up the publication of this review.
