We grew up in an era when computer typing skills were just starting to be recognized as a necessity. That is to say, typing wasn’t just a secretarial pursuit (good riddance to that way of thinking, we say!) but was seen as the primary method by which we communicate to the world.
I bring this up just to make a point: We spent a lot of our youth playing typing games, and Letterorites is perhaps the best defense of the genre we’ve seen yet. It’s not the only iPhone typing game, but it’s a solid entry. And for our full review, you need only to slide on down below the break!
Concept and Functionality
If you’re unfamiliar with how typing games work, then let us be the first to educate you: Usually you’ll find a series of falling, sliding or otherwise moving letters that need to be typed out as quickly as possible. This is exactly what you’ll find with Letterorites.
Letters fall from the sky, and it is your duty to type them out as rapidly as you can. By doing so, you’ll gain coins (points-ish) and shoot up through the levels. Like any arcade game, that’s the goal here, and the game will even track your leader board progress—globally and locally.
Along the way you’ll also encounter a stunning variety of letters. There’s regular ones, as well as color-coded models. Add to this chained entries, mutating letters, and the Letter-O-Rite (No, we aren’t explaining, you’ll just have to play the game to figure out that last one!)
You’ll also unlock level bosses, special weapons, and multiple cannon types to advance the gameplay. It’s a lot of fun, and don’t forget: Underneath all of this you are slowly learning how to type faster on your device, as well!
Design and Graphics
In fact, the only area where we might deduct points from Lettorites is in its looks. While the graphics are more than adequate for a game such as this, they aren’t the sharpest we’ve ever seen. It reminds us of those old typing programs we mentioned earlier—considering how long ago that was, this isn’t a good thing.
Still, the controls are effortless (assuming you’ve typed on your phone before) and the graphics are good enough that we found ourselves hooked anyway. So all in all, we’re willing to overlook some poorly chosen gradients in favor of the fun gameplay you’ll find here.
And at the end of the day, Letterorites managed to do something we hadn’t thought possible—it taught us to type faster on the iPhone than we had ever typed before. And those that know us understand the magnitude of that statement! For that, we are ever grateful, and we’re more than happy to call Letterorites the bargain that it is.
If you’re looking for a fun, fast-paced typing game on the iPhone, you may very well have found your match in Letterorites.
