News Item: Counting Together!
Written by Luke Patrick
We’ve said it before many times here on the site, so forgive us for saying it again: But we just can’t get over how useful iOS is as an educational tool.
Every time we think we’ve seen it all, some developer comes out with a great new way to teach our kids, and we’re just as amazed as when we first started. Such is the case with Counting Together!, a brand new educational game by developer Barrett Productions.
The application is newsworthy for a number of reasons. To begin with, it features stunning graphics and a very well-designed interface. The entire atmosphere of the app is jungle-themed with a dinosaur focus. This means there’s an entire world of sounds, graphics, and effects to keep every child entertained locked away here.
But beyond its good looks, Counting Together is important because of what it teaches our children. You see, there are lots of counting games out there. Sure, there are plenty of options you could go with that teach your child one to ten, or even beyond. But no other application we have ever encountered teaches children to recognize groups of numbers without counting them individually.
This process is called subtilizing, and we do it every day of our lives as adults. If you see a group of three objects, you don’t have to count them individually to know there are three. This concept applies to groups of any size, and reinforcing these skills in our youths is an incredibly ingenious idea.
“Subitizing is a fundamental skill in the development of students’ understanding of numbers” – says Arthur J. Baroody, Professor of Curriculum & Instruction (early childhood and elementary mathematics education) at the University of Illinois at Urbana- Champaign
Better still, the whole concept is wrapped in one, apparently quite entertaining package. The application has garnered rave reviews from users and professionals alike.
Famed childhood education expert and Children’s Educational Television aficionado Bob McGrath had this to say about Counting Together:
“The people in my neighborhood are all excited about this new mobile app to help children develop their Math Skills. Counting Together is all business when it comes to teaching visual counting math skills, but the kids will never know it.”
Counting Together has also been shown to provide therapeutic benefits to those stricken with dyslexia, brain injuries, early-stage Alzheimer’s Disease, and other cognitive issues.
All in all, Counting Together looks like (at the least) an educational application to keep an eye on. And if you’re a parent of a child or children ages five to eight, considering Counting Together has no price tag on it—the application is totally free in the iTunes App Store, available for both iPad and iPhone—there’s no reason to wait. At the worst, your kids don’t like it.
Best case scenario, your kid becomes the next Stephen Hawking. And that’s really pretty good isn’t it?
Counting Together! requires iOS 6.0 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch.
