Whether you’re an art student, a web designer, or someone who’s simply interested in learning more about the world of color, this is definitely an app to try.
Concept and Functionality:
Testing Shades Inc. for review brought me back to the old-school days of Windows 98 and Paint.
I used to spend hours creating intricate color blends and felt proud when I filled those empty white blocks with colors I blended myself. Shades Inc. takes your interest in color and catapults it to a new level of awesome thanks to a bunch of different things you can do.
Shades Inc. offers interesting and unique games to test your color knowledge. There are two tests you can try, one which gauges your ability to associate a color with its name and another where you try to guess the official name of a color.
There’s an informative Science section of Shades Inc. which educates users on the fine inner workings of the color world. I found the games to be fun and entertaining, and it’s clear to see how they’re designed to help you learn more about color identification.
For those who are looking for something other than knowledge and games, Shades Inc. includes a tool that allows you to browse through readymade colors quickly and easily.
There are hundreds of shades to look through, and tapping on one will reveal the hex code for the shade (a must-have for web designers). Users can also create their own custom shade using a variety of modes like RGB, CMYK, and HSV.
From games to science, it seems like Shades Inc. has pretty much everything covered in the world of color. The phrase “Something for everyone” definitely applies to this app, because it’s basically four different apps in one.
Shades Inc. is incredibly intuitive and easy to navigate, saving users from becoming overwhelmed.
While testing Shades Inc., the only feature I found to be absent is the ability to save favorite colors while browsing the list of colors or making my own.
This could easily be rectified by implementing a “Favorites” page on the menu which would automatically save colors that appeal to users. This idea could even be used for the color games; if a user stumbles on a color they really enjoy, they can bookmark it.
Shades Inc. can be downloaded from the App Store for $0.99 and is designed for iPhone.
If you find yourself working with different colors on a regular basis, Shades Inc. is an app that can’t be passed up.
The app is fun to use, intuitive, and it’ll definitely be your go-to resource for everything color related.
Shades Inc. requires iOS 7.0 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. This app is optimized for iPhone 5. A small expedite fee was paid to speed up the publication of this review.
