Word Wheel: Short Vowels, developed by Teknos Interactive LLC, is a fun new way to teach kids how to recognize and understand vowels in words using either an iPhone or an iPad.

Concept and Functionality:

It certainly isn’t a secret that the iPhone and iPad is an incredible learning tool. Word Wheel: Short Vowels allows children to practice learning and using the vowels of the English alphabet in a fun and unique way.

The app features a clean and cute layout which is easy to navigate, though I definitely recommend taking a look at the tutorial when using the app for the first time.

The goal of Word Wheel: Short Vowels is to allow children to practice pronouncing and recognizing vowels in a clear and continuous way.

This is done by selecting which vowel to practice and using the spinners on the left and right side of the screen to change words. For example, if a child is practicing the vowel a, he or she can use the left spinner to select the first letters of the word and the right spinner to select the last letters of a word.

Once a word is selected, a piece of artwork depicting the word is displayed and children can listen to the word being pronounced by an actual person.

Of all the ways Word Wheel: Short Vowels allows children to learn about different vowels and their sounds, I’d have to say that my favorite thing about the app is that kids really are in control.

While it might take a little while for them to learn exactly how the app works, it’s nice to see that it’s self-sustaining and kids can progress at their own pace.

When kids are ready, they can also take a quiz to help gauge their progress.

Word Wheel: Short Vowels includes plenty of features that make the learning process productive for parents and teachers as well as kids.

For example, the app features a star rating system that demonstrates word mastery. When a child practices a word, a star is added to it and the word is considered to be mastered when three stars are earned.

Parents can choose to hide mastered words so children can focus on words they still need to learn.

While many educational apps tend to try and limit parental involvement, Word Wheel: Short Vowels does the exact opposite by allowing parents and teachers to enable manual progress starring.

Essentially this means that parents can sit with their child and practice vowels with the app together, making the learning process even more involved.

Word Wheel: Short Vowels can be downloaded from the App Store for $2.99 and is compatible with iPhone and iPad.

Both parents and teachers should find Word Wheel: Short Vowels to be an invaluable learning resource that’s both fun to use and educational.
