Some of you die-hard gamers out there might just remember Atari. Do you recall hundreds of games of eight-bit goodness that would keep you entertained for hours? Well, if you do, you’ll love the new-age title, Waypoint Commander, from Broken Bone Games.
This game takes some of the greatest utility and technique found within old-school gaming, and adapts them for the new millennium, and better yet, your iPhone!
So now you’re in outer space, floating across the galaxy at millions of light-years per hour.
You’d be best advised to strap on your helmet, and get to firing your weapons, as infinite swarms of spacebugs are headed toward you at rapid speeds!
Cruise through galactic altitudes, and choose whether or not to blast the bugs, or to slip past them. Most likely, you’ll have to do both to avoid these little critters that are hell-bent on destroying your spacecraft.
With over ten varieties of spacebugs to battle (all nuanced and requiring different modes and rigor of attacks) and over thirty weapon upgrades available, there is more than one way to skin a spacebug while playing Waypoint Commander.
Concept and Functionality:
While the Atari influence is evident, the plethora of in-app purchases, add-ons, and upgrades available keep this game exciting all the time.
Just when you’ve gotten the hang of blasting your enemy into a thousand bits, you’ll realize that they increase in both frequency and difficulty. This is when it makes most sense to upgrade your arsenal at around $0.99 a pop.
Each additional weapon will set you back about a dollar, but for Plasma Bombs, Diamond Tipped Bullets, Ion-Pulse Gunners, Defensive Drone’s and much more, you’ll find that you can get much further in the game by equipping yourself with these fine weapons.
If you advance beyond the default tier of 2 turrets, you’ll find that tier’s 1 and 2 of four and six turrets respectively, allow you a significant increase in fire power.
If you’re committed to buying these weapons organically through coin-collection, you’ll also be able to share to Facebook and Twitter for significant coin bonuses as well.
You’ll also have the ability to remove ads for a dollar, and this can help to refine and focus your gameplay by removing clutter from the app.
While the app does allow for a great deal of free fun, serious gamers might want to throw some hard earned dollars at this one in order to increase their arsenal.
Overall, the game plays fluidly and provides enough dynamism and challenge to keep even Atari veterans on their heels.
But be warned; you’ll have to be playing your best to avoid being turned into space-dust.
The nuts and bolts of this app are absolutely free, so in that sense, there’s really no downside to downloading. If you’re morally opposed to killing swarms of foreign creatures, then this app may not resonate with you.
However, if you’re nostalgic for eight-bit gamers, and Arcade style shooters, then this game is going to provide you with hours of satisfaction.
For those who have already exhausted Atari’s Greatest Hits and are looking for the new up and up, Waypoint Commander is (literally) out of this world!
Waypoint Commander requires iOS 6.0 or later. Compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. This app is optimized for iPhone 5. A small expedite fee was paid to speed up the publication of this review.
