Over the years, and we never would have expected this, the single most plentiful genre on the iPad isn’t aimed at those above three feet high.
In fact, it seems like a majority of the applications out there are intended to be used by our children. Most have an educational purpose, some have great graphics, and a few have really solid games to entertain the kiddos. However, finding an app like Talking ABC, from Jutiful, that so expertly combines all three is a bit of a rarity.
This title is one of the easiest, and most effective ways we’ve seen yet to teach your child the alphabet. And if it’s our full review you’re wanting, you’ll find it tucked away below!
Concept and Functionality
As with most applications aimed at the little ones, this one has a specific educational point in mind.
Talking ABC provides you with a highly effective means of instructing your child on how to pronounce and recognize the letters of the alphabet. This is done, chiefly, through a literal menagerie of talking animals.
Each animal in the collection is associated with a specific letter. For instance, alligator is “A,” bear is “B,” walrus is “W,” and so on and so forth. When pressed, each letter sparks a claymation inspired animation, in which the creature du jour says what it is, and gives a pronunciation. It’s simple, effective, and marvelously entertaining: Even to us wizened old folks, well past the target market.
When your child tires of that, the app also comes with an assortment of four mini-games. Each one is also bent around the alphabet, as well as the cute characters established int he talking bit from before. Overall, it’s unbelievably solid, and from a constructional standpoint, it couldn’t be better.
Graphics and Artwork
We have seen more children’s applications than likely anyone else on the planet. With that in mind, we haven’t seen one that’s better decorated than Talking ABC. And we really, really mean that.
The hand-crafted artwork is gorgeous, fluid, and utterly believable. Likewise, the voice-acting here—though hardly Oscar winning—is engaging, cheerful, and professional. You’d be surprised how little that last one comes into play.
Truly, the developers have crafted here a thing of beauty, and you’d be hard pressed to find a better looking title for ages 2-7 anywhere in the App Store.
At the end of the day, the three dollars you’ll pay for Talking ABC are infinitely rewarding in terms of both education and entertainment, and best of all, there are no in-app purchases. After spending the three bucks you’re done!
What you have here is a stunning, highly involved and well-produced marvel of the genre.
We highly recommend it to any discerning parent, as Talking ABC earns our fullest marks with ease. Bravo, guys!
