Many games suffer as a result of being very simple to play, but legendary and successful games like Doodle Jump prove that the right combination of gameplay and design is the ultimate decider when it comes to how successful a game can be.
SantaDrop, developed by The App Developers, is a fantastically fun endless falling game for iPhone. If you’re still looking for a challenging game to get you into the holiday spirit, this one’s for you!
Concept and Gameplay:
When I first played SantaDrop, the first thing that came to my mind was how much it was like Doodle Jump in reverse. The goal of the game is to tilt your iPhone and guide Santa down the chimney.
This ain’t no casual sleigh ride, though! You’ll be dashing and dodging your way around explosive presents, chunks of coal, and even billows of hot steam.
If you hit more than three pieces of coal, the game is over. Crashing into a dynamite present or colliding with steam will cause the game to end, as well. As far as good objects go, you definitely want to help Santa collect as many presents as possible.
Collecting a line of presents will give Santa a speed boost, and collecting cogs will give players a score multiplier.
Though SantaDrop is simple, it’s incredibly fun to play. I found it to be very challenging and nearly impossible to get more than a couple thousand points, but the music and graphics are so well done that I couldn’t help but to keep playing.
While I was playing SantaDrop, the only improvement I could think of was how nice it would be to have the ability to change the rate of speed of his fall. There were plenty of times when I felt like he was flying way too darn fast, which made playing the game fairly frustrating. I’d love to see a difficulty level feature added in the future, which would be infinitely helpful for casual players who just want a nice game to play.
iPhone gamers who enjoy connecting to Game Center so they can battle their friends and earn achievements will be slightly disappointed to know that SantaDrop isn’t Game Center enabled, although it does allows players to connect with Facebook to keep track of leaderboard scores. As someone who likes to keep Facebook free of games and notifications, I feel that Game Center integration would be a big benefit.
SantaDrop is available to download from the App Store for only $0.99 and is worth every penny.
Though it’s a challenging game that might get frustrating at the beginning, Santa Drop’s great graphics and catchy background music will keep you coming back for more.
SantaDrop requires iOS 6.0 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. This app is optimized for iPhone 5. A small expedite fee was paid to speed up the publication of this review.
