Penkie Pop, from Seong Lee, is a dynamic little action game in the vein of Temple Run, but gone arctic. Take Penkie the Penguin and steer him through a perpetual mix of obstacles that all hope to devastate his momentum in this infinitely icy runner.
With rockets, glitchy sound effects, high-speeds, power ups and tilt-sensitive controls, it doesn’t take much to get hooked into Penkie Pop. The action is full of different obstacles and variables to keep you on your toes and grinding through the tundra.
The game itself sounds a lot like Sonic, with graphics emulating Playstation’s Crash Bandicoot, and speed and shifting like Temple Run. Utilizing this hybrid of characteristics, Penkie Pop carves out its own lane of action fun in this nifty little game.
The apps latest update was just under two-weeks ago, so attentive development has helped to smooth out any recent kinks within this game.
Additionally, the app comes fully integrated with both Facebook and Twitter functionality, so users are able compare scores and ultimately compete with their peer group.
This sort of integration allows Penkie Pop to enjoy an “old-school” aesthetic, while still enticing new and younger fans.
Concept and Functionality:
Nothing earth shattering here, but at the same time, there’s enough variation to keep old users challenged. This game is very much a synthesis of new gameplay with old technique. There are so many inter-game options and add-ons, that it takes quite a while to get thoroughly familiar with this game and the assortment of features that it offers. This sort of depth makes Penkie Pop more challenging, and satisfying, than it may ultimately appear.
Some portions of this game are a tiny bit delayed, but this doesn’t really hinder gameplay too significantly.
This action packed app is solid, and in the wintertime, something is really pertinent about the icy vibrations and sub-zero features available within it.
There’s something familiar for older gamers, but enough fresh features and quick paced tempo to keep new gamers intrigued and improving their skill as well.
Penkie Pop is currently free, in light of the holidays, for a limited time. So we definitely recommend getting aboard that rocket and going for a test-run before the next winter blast hits.
Penkie Pop requires iOS 4.2 or later. Compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. This app is optimized for iPhone 5. A small expedite fee was paid to speed up the publication of this review.
