Without a doubt this is a fantastically unique way to learn the letters of the alphabet. Jamaroos Musical ABCs is sure to be a hit with both kids and parents.
Concept and Functionality:
As someone who is very involved in music, it always makes me happy to see an educational app that includes music as a teaching tool. What makes me even happier is when such an app uses music in a very creative way.
Jamaroos Musical ABCs does just that by helping children learn the 26 letters of the English alphabet using animals and musical instruments.
From Al the Alligator’s alto horn to Zap the Zebra’s zither, kids will love getting acquainted with each animal and instrument.
Perhaps my favorite thing about Jamaroos Musical ABCs is the app’s simplicity. To activate a letter, kids simply drag the letter from the A-Z list at the bottom of the screen up to the stage.
The animal representing the letter appears, and a clear narrator introduces the animal and their instrument. That’s not all, though. Tapping on the animal will make them play a song on their instrument.
There are also pictures of objects that start with the same letter, and tapping on one of them will cause the objects to fall from the top of the screen. Children can strengthen fine motor skills by stacking objects on top of eachother. Tapping on each object will make it disappear.
While I absolutely fell in love with the musical aspect of Jamaroos Musical ABCs, I feel the added object “minigame” at the bottom of the screen takes away from the overall experience of the app. I think it would be much better if the narrator simply sounded the word out while the word was displayed on the screen. The primary reason why I’m not a huge fan of it is because I found it incredibly easy to accidentally tap the original object, which makes icons rain down all over again.
Jamaroos Musical ABCs is pretty simple and straightforward when it comes to what the app is meant to teach to children. I have to admit that the narration is very clear and easy to understand, so it’s a very viable learning app.
I was also surprised and thrilled to see the incredible variety of musical instruments represented with each letter, many of which I’ve never even heard of.
Another awesome feature of Jamaroos Musical ABCs takes music a step further. There’s a handy “About the Instruments” page which gives a detailed description of every instrument that’s featured in Jamaroos Musical ABCs.
This page is a wonderful way for parents to teach their child even more about a particular instrument, especially one that’s their favorite.
