It’s not often that we encounter an app that’s as simple as fingersweep, from Render Junkies LLC, and yet still incredibly fun to play.

The game’s controls are as easy as they are frantic, and the premise itself takes only a few seconds to figure out. In fact, if you have half a brain you can learn to play fingersweep.

And if you have half a heart, you’ll likely fall quite in love with it. It’s arcade gaming taken all the way back to its roots, with a noticeable modern twist. And if that’s enough to get your interest, then we’ll go ahead and satiate your curiosity below, down beyond the break.

Concept and Gameplay

We’ve been rather vague about what you’ll actually do in fingersweep up until now, but this has been an intentional oversight. You see, it just doesn’t take long to sum up the action: At the center of the screen is a wavy line.

On either side of this line is an oncoming wave of color. It’s your job to become Eraserhead and scrub away all the excess, preventing any color from touching that center mark. The more that wall is breached, the more health you lose. Eventually, you’ll fail, and your high score is tallied based on how long you could stay alive.

And that’s it! To dive only slightly deeper, this will largely add up to hours feverishly scratching and scraping, desperately hunting for those tiny specks right at the corners that will eventually take you down. It’s a lot of fun, even if it can be frustratingly picky at times.

Furthermore, to keep things interesting the developers have introduced powerups and a multiplayer mode. Both of these, especially the former, keep the gameplay fresh and involved. You’ll need to play or pay to unlock all the extra specials, which also gives you a reason to use fingersweep in the first place.

Design and Interface

At first, we didn’t except to like the way that fingersweep looks. It’s not the world’s prettiest game, nor is it the most ornate. But as we played with the app, we quickly discovered that its beauty is in the elegance.

There’s nothing here that doesn’t need to be here. The powerups aren’t flashy, but rather fit right into the game’s “universe.” Likewise, the soothing graphics are a nice juxtaposition to the harsh, frenetic gameplay.

All in all, it’s a beautiful package, and one that we can’t help but enjoy time and time again.

Overall Value

fingersweep is a phenomenally addictive and wonderfully ensnaring arcade title for the iPhone. It’s even more fun with two people, and as you progress through the ranks, the powerups only add more fun and potential to the action.

Overall, that means the app gets a solid rating from us, as well as a firm recommendation to anyone with an interest in arcade titles for iOS.
