Do you remember how you first learned how to read? If you don’t, that’s ok – as long as you can read The iPhone App Review, that’s all that really matters.

But in all seriousness, sometimes as a kid, reading book after book can get tedious if your child is trying to learn how to read. On the other hand, Professor Word, developed by The Doppler FX, can show your child how to have a great time with his or her ABCs.

Concept and Functionality:

Professor Word is the adorable Einstein look-alike protagonist in the app. When you get to the game page, you’re presented with three different mini-games to play, all of which are timed: Word Pop, Memorize and Categorize.

In Word Pop, you’re shown a cartoon and given letters to spell out what’s shown. The only tricky part of this game is that the letters are contained in bubbles, which means that they’ll float around and make it more difficult for you to spell the word.

Even though I’ve been reading for a good while now (made it to college!), I still found my thumb slipping and pressing the wrong letter every now and then when I wasn’t concentrating hard enough.

If you want to work on improving your memory, Professor Word also has a memory game, where you flip over clouds on a 4×4 grid and do your best to match pictures of cute animals, food and other objects with each other.

But think fast – the time runs down quicker than you think.

Then there’s the categorization game, which will test your reading ability by selecting the correct item that’s shown on the blackboard down below.

The catch is that these items are falling from the sky in mini-parachutes, and you’re trying to prevent them from falling into your boat. Miss one, and you’re in trouble!

In Professor Word, there’s an emphasis on illustrations and color, which ultimately makes learning more interactive and memorable. Take the main character, for example, with his pink cheeks, shiny eyes and moppy mustache.

In each game, the Professor is always enthusiastic about learning, be it through rowing a boat while categorizing or looking on while spelling.

The rest of the pictures that are used throughout the game are just as fun, with the same bright colors and eager expressions. Professor Word, in fact, is made up of more than 250 original pieces of artwork, making the game pop altogether.

Because this game is for kids, Professor Word has a strict policy that no personally identifiable information is collected, and all words and images are carefully selected so that you know your child can learn in peace.

And once he or she starts getting really good, achievements will be unlocked, which will help motivate your child to learn even more.

Professor Word is a great app for parents that are looking to find other creative ways to get their kids excited about learning. The interface of the app is very kid-friendly, with big buttons and lots of vivid colors.

If your child plays with the game enough, he or she will definitely learn more than a couple of new words and concepts — all while having fun too, and that’s what matters the most.

BouncyBallProfessor Word requires iOS 5.0 or later. Compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. This app is optimized for iPhone 5. A small expedite fee was paid to speed up the publication of this review.
