iPhone App Review by TheiPhoneAppReview.com
In Japanese, the word “kawaii” is used to describe all things cute and adorable. Frilly skirts? Kawaii. A puppy that fits in a teacup? Definitely kawaii. The sky’s the limit when it comes to things that are kawaii, and Kawaiit!, a social app developed by jig.jp, is the destination for everything cute.
Concept and Functionality:
With Kawaiit!, users can browse through a number of categories including fashion, animals and photography, to see the photos that the community has submitted. Users have the final say in determining whether a photo meets the kawaii criteria by voting.
The more yeses that a photo receives, the better chance it has to be featured on Kawaiit!’s “Weekly Ranking,” a roundup of the cutest and most recent photos from the community.
Each photo you vote on will be shown on your profile, so that if you want to go back and revisit something cute you saw, it will already be saved. And if you feel like scrolling through photos, you can view the user-submitted photos in tile view, which allows for quicker and easier navigation.
The Kawaiit! interface can look a little overcrowded at first, but once you get the hang of the app, it gets easier and easier to use. The buttons and graphics are very clean and the app provides a very enjoyable user experience.
If you want to categorize your own favorite photos from the community, Kawaiit! lets users create magazines, which are collections of photos that you can put together and customize.
To submit your own photos to be voted on, you can take a photo, import a photo from your camera roll or look up cute photos on the Internet. But it doesn’t end there – add stickers like hearts and stars to your photos or use filters to give your photos an extra kawaii boost.
Considering that the Kawaii app targets both Japanese and English speakers, it’s interesting to see how the Japanese “kawaii” culture translates in a different culture. With its pink theme and hearts galore, the Kawaiit app is also marketed towards a predominately female audience.
As fun as Kawaiit is, there is one dark side to the app. Though photos of pets and cupcakes are usually unanimously voted on as cute, not all photos of people have the same outcome. From time to time, you’ll see an innocent selfie with many more downvotes than upvotes, which can seriously hurt a person’s feelings.
So when using Kawaiit, make sure to be fair and respectful to the community. But overall, this app stands out as one of the more unique apps out there, revolving around the Japanese “kawaii” culture. If you haven’t downloaded the app yet, it’s certainly worth a try.
Kawaiit! Requires iOS 6.0 or later. Compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. This app is optimized for iPhone 5. A small expedite fee was paid to speed up the publication of this review.
