YoDarling – Flirt, chat and meet new people. Easy dating for singles.
iPhone App Review by TheiPhoneAppReview.com
Dating apps for iPhone and iPad seem to be as common as games. It’s incredibly difficult for developers to come up with a truly unique idea that will help set their app apart from the rest. I’ve seen some pretty creative social apps, but I’ve also encountered quite a few apps with good intentions but poor execution.
YoDarling, developed by App Fiction GmbH, is an interesting dating app for iPhone and iPad. If you’re familiar with iPhone dating apps, you’ll be disappointed to find that there’s nothing to set YoDarling apart from the rest of the crowd.
Concept and Functionality:
Even though I thought the name of the app was cute, YoDarling’s hand drawn artwork definitely turned me off. I understand that it’s probably an attempt to set the YoDarling app apart from other dating apps, but there are plenty of other ways to do so. Some might like the stick figure look, but it definitely didn’t appeal to me.
Graphics aside, YoDarling is your typical iPhone dating app. Once you sign up for an account via Facebook or email, you’re able to browse profiles of other YoDarling users. The app asks for your location in order to show users around you, but the one nice part about this is that you don’t have to give the app permission in order to browse profiles. However, you’re unable to search for users in a specific state or city if you deny location access. Essentially this means you’re either browsing profiles from around the world or on your doorstep.
If you find someone you like, you can press the YoDarling button on their profile to let them know. If the interest is mutual, users can chat with eachother using the built-in messenger. Overall, there’s nothing spectacularly unique about YoDarling as far as revolutionizing the way people use iPhone dating apps. Essentially it’s just another virtual ecosystem where people might like to set up a profile and try to meet new people.
Unfortunately YoDarling doesn’t include any unique features that aren’t found in other dating apps. This is a real heartbreaker, mainly because it means there’s nothing that keeps users coming back to the app except for other people. For example, I couldn’t find a way to save another user’s profile without letting them know I’m “interested”. Something as simple as private likes could definitely help users who aren’t ready to start chatting with someone but would like to keep them in mind.
Users who are a bit more serious about dating might be interested in the premium feature of YoDarling. For $2.99 per month you can banish ads and send an unlimited number of YoDarlings to other users. Also, premium members’ profiles are displayed at the top of search results. I could see a one-time purchase of $2.99 to unlock the premium membership option, but the monthly charge is a bit ridiculous for the limited number of features you get.
YoDarling can be downloaded for free from the App Store, but as I mentioned before, there’s a premium version which charges you $2.99 per month. As far as recommending YoDarling as a dating app, it doesn’t hurt to set up a profile and see who’s out there, but that’s only if you can overlook the childish artwork.
YoDarling requires iOS 6.0 or later. Compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. This app is optimized for iPhone 5. A small expedite fee was paid to speed up the publication of this review.
