The Awesome Whiz Quiz
iPhone Game Review by TheiPhoneAppReview.com
Quizzes are used by teachers to gauge how well you’re learning new material and to make sure you’re paying attention in class. How on earth could an app that quizzes you be considered fun? To start, you don’t need to know who ruled England in the fifteenth century, but you do need to be able to make quick judgements and recognize patterns.
Concept and Gameplay:
For anyone who wants to know where they stand in terms of general knowledge, The Awesome Whiz Quiz is a great game to test basic skills. You’ll be challenged with over 300 questions across five basic tests and two special tests: the Impossible Test and the Multilingual Test.
Tests are timed and you earn points for each correct answer. You can even earn bonus points if you answer a question quickly. Some questions require multiple answers, so reading the question thoroughly is a must.
If you happen to answer a question incorrectly, you can save yourself with the Save Me bonus, which gives you another attempt to answer the question. The Awesome Whiz Quiz allows you one Save Me bonus to start, and after you’ve used it you’ll need to purchase more in the game’s store. You can also purchase and use a 50:50 bonus, which eliminates half of the answers that are incorrect.
Regarding overall gameplay, I found The Awesome Whiz Quiz to have cute animations and catchy music. However, I was disappointed to see that answers aren’t shuffled each time you start a test. This means it’s easy to memorize answers and blast through a test without giving it much thought. This definitely makes the game less challenging and is quite a bit of a disadvantage for those who really want to test themselves.
The Awesome Whiz Quiz features over 60 achievements to earn as you play the game, as well as Game Center leaderboards for every test. You can even keep track of your friends’ scores and compete against them for bragging rights.
There’s also an interesting sheet of bubble wrap on the right side of The Awesome Whiz Quiz’s menu, and I’m not quite sure what purpose it serves. A new sheet of bubble wrap appears when you pop all of them, and the number you’ve popped is tracked. This might unlock a hidden feature or might be there just to entertain you.
The Awesome Whiz Quiz is available to download from the App Store for free but does include quite a few in-app purchases, such as unlocking the rest of the tests and purchasing additional bonuses. There’s also a tiny ad bar at the bottom of the screen, but it didn’t really get in the way of gameplay.
Overall, there’s nothing that forces you to buy bonuses, but you might want to unlock all of the tests for $1.99. The Awesome Whiz Quiz certainly is an entertaining game to play and is a great way to challenge yourself, but the lack of question shuffling is a big disappointment for me.
The Awesome Whiz Quiz requires iOS 5.0 or later. Compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. This app is optimized for iPhone 5. A small expedite fee was paid to speed up the publication of this review.
