Rocco’s Block Land
iPhone Game Review by TheiPhoneAppReview.com
Rocco’s Block Land, developed by York Burkhardt, is an entertaining 2D side-scrolling game for iPhone and iPad. Fans of classic games like Super Mario will definitely enjoy this modern version of the game.
Concept and Gameplay:
Though Super Mario is likely the definitive side-scrolling game, it’s fun to see what developers do to add their own spin on this classic genre. Rocco’s Block Land includes amusing arcade like gameplay, great music, and exciting little twists and turns that keep players on their toes.
Rocco’s Block Land features Rocco, an adorable little ball who rolls through the world collecting stars and coins. Controlling Rocco requires pressing the directional buttons on the bottom left part of the screen.
Players can make Rocco roll right or left, and even jump. Each world is filled with bad guys who are waiting to steal a life, as well as bonuses and powerups to help Rocco make his way to the end of each stage.
From invisible boxes and the classic question mark containers to bonus levels and ominous bad guys, I have to admit that I’m fairly disappointed in the game as far as coming up with original ideas and content. Rocco’s Block Land only has one soundtrack, so I found myself shutting audio off after a few minutes of gameplay.
Overall, the game felt like a modern version of Super Mario with little to set itself apart from the undisputed ruler of side-scrolling games.
Rocco’s Block Land includes a handy tutorial to help guide new players through the basics of the game. I found the tutorial to be helpful and informative, and it pretty much explained everything a player needs to know in order to successfully complete levels.
The game also offers three difficulty modes, which is perfect for casual players and those who like a good challenge. Lastly, there are two save slots to save to, allowing multiple players to progress through the game on the same device.
Rocco’s Block Land offers a couple customization options for players, including the ability to select the menu background color and the color of your Rocco character. While not something that’s groundbreaking, it does add a nice touch to the game. I do wish there were a few more options as far as Rocco styles, but hopefully this is something that will be improved in future updates.
Rocco’s Block Land is available to download from the App Store for free and is universally compatible with iPhone and iPad. The free version of the game allows you to play a small handful of levels and you’ll need to pay $0.99 via in-app purchase in order to unlock the remaining 50+ levels. If the ads on the main screen annoy you, that’s another $0.99. Overall, I definitely think the level unlock purchase is worth it, but spending almost a dollar to banish ads on the menu screen is not.
Rocco’s Block Land requires iOS 4.3 or later. Compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. This app is optimized for iPhone 5.
