For those of you who might be new to the HDR scene, the idea is simple. A high dynamic resolution photo consists of two photos of the same subject, one underexposed and one overexposed.

The photos are combined by an app or software program to create a dynamic photo with vibrant colors. Most cameras and smart phones on the market today have a built-in HDR setting, though quite a few iPhone photography apps try to perfect the process in their own unique way.

Fotor HDR is a brand-new way to create stunning high dynamic resolution photos on your iPhone. Developed by Chengdu Everimaging Science and Technology Co., Ltd, this feature-packed photography app has a few pleasant surprises.

Concept and Functionality:

Unfortunately there are iPhone apps that turn the simple process of taking a picture into something equivalent to jumping backwards through hoops. Luckily Fotor HDR isn’t one of them thanks to a very clean and refined interface that’s easy to understand and navigate.

A helpful on-screen guide points out the different functions of the app to new users, and you can optionally watch a handy instructional video on how to use the app.

One of the first things we noticed and liked about Fotor HDR is the fact that every tool is conveniently located on the main screen, meaning you don’t have to dig through menus and search high and low for a feature or setting.

For example, you can easily turn on the alignment grid function by tapping the button at the top left corner of the screen. In the same breath, you can switch between a full-size photo and a square photo.

Fotor HDR includes something that I’ve never encountered in other HDR photography apps, which is a sliding shutter button that allows you to quickly choose between immediately creating an HDR photo and saving photos to process a later time. Creating an HDR photo does create quite a bit of lag time between shots, and having this option readily available is perfect for those who need to shoot first and apply HDR later.

Fotor HDR is a very well-rounded photography app thanks to a multitude of features and extra goodies. For example, you can add a variety of unique and creative filters to your HDR photo while processing it. You can also adjust basic settings like brightness, contrast, and vignette.

This gives users unprecedented control over their photos, leaving creativity to be limited only by your imagination.

Though Fotor HDR includes plenty of other features besides editing capabilities, another great aspect I want to mention is the built-in photo box. This feature not only helps to keep your photos organized, but also allows you to go back and add different filters to photos taken with the app without having to search for and import the original photo.

Fotor HDR is available to download from the App Store for $1.99. Given the number of features it includes in the quality of the photos it produces, we think that this is a very reasonable price for what you’re getting. Our only complaint really is that this terrific app is only for the iPhone, in the future we’d love to see Fotor HDR go beyond the iPhone and become available to download on the iPad, as well.

fotor_HDR.jpgPhotor HDR requires iOS 6.0 or later. Compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. This app is optimized for iPhone 5. A small expedite fee was paid to speed up the publication of this review.
