If there’s one thing that’s certain, it’s that your iPhone can do almost anything. When it comes to fitness, your phone is an excellent alternative to spending hundreds of dollars on special equipment to enhance your workout.
From keeping track of your daily run to even functioning as a heart rate monitor, it’s no wonder that so many people turn to their iPhone as their primary workout companion.
Concept and Functionality:
True to its name, Cardio Smackdown! provides a whole new way to workout both alone and with others around the world. To start, the app asks you a few basic questions about your body profile such as weight, height, and gender. You can also choose the time interval for when you want to be updated on your progress during your workout.
After the quick and simple initial setup, you’re free to start exercising immediately. Simply choose the exercise type and whether or not you want to challenge a friend or complete a solo workout. You can select the treadmill, elliptical, or outdoor activity such as a run or bike ride.
When you’re ready, Cardio Smackdown! will countdown and automatically start your workout timer. The app tracks a plethora of information such as distance, speed, calories burned, and even the number of steps you’ve taken.
For fitness gurus who are feeling social, it’s incredibly easy to challenge a friend or stranger via Game Center. Challenges take place in real time, which adds an exciting new twist to your workout and helps to keep you motivated. When you’re finished with your workout, you can check out the progress tracker which shows your previous workout stats as well as your totals to date.
Cardio Smackdown! tries to be a truly well-rounded fitness app by including an astounding number of features to enhance your workout. From the ability to import an iTunes playlist from your phone to sharing your workout statistics with friends on Facebook and Twitter, the app definitely has a bit of everything.
One thing I want to mention, though, is that I didn’t have great luck with the pedometer function. I would take 30 to 40 steps only to see that the app had registered 10 at the most. This leads to inaccuracies in almost every stat, from calories burned to speed and distance traveled.
Users are able to adjust pedometer sensitivity, but I wasn’t able to find a setting that would track my steps accurately.
Cardio Smackdown! is priced at $0.99, which is a pretty good deal given the price of related fitness apps. I love the idea of competing against people live via Game Center, but issues with the pedometer are keeping me from saying it’s the next greatest workout companion.
However, this is hopefully something that can be solved in a future update, so ultimately the choice is up to you as to whether or not you feel Cardio Smackdown is an app that can add a twist to your cardio workout.
