For me, Halloween means the final fun night out before the cold of winter sets in. It’s a time when we get to pretend we’re someone (or something) else, which is a great way to escape the mundane for a day.
While costumes can be fun and exciting, pumpkins are my personal favorite when it comes to Halloween. From creating spooky lanterns to baking pumpkin seeds, it’s what I look forward to the most.
Concept and Functionality:
Pumpkin carving can be as simple or as intricate as you want. Like sculptors with a chunk of rock or ice, this earthen fruit is your canvas. PumpkinFACE is a unique app that will help you find inspiration for your next masterpiece by granting you access to scores of carving patterns.
The hardest part for me was trying to figure out how to use the app. The idea is to take a picture of your pumpkin and select the pattern to overlay, but there was no way to know that unless I spent a great deal of time fiddling with the app.
While the concept is great, PumpkinFACE takes a big hit when it comes to functionality. You’re supposed to choose between Trick or Treat, which organizes patterns by menacing or silly. After that, you can upload an image to the app and select your pattern. Once you press Done, your image is “analyzed” and the pattern is applied to the photo.
Personally I think PumpkinFACE needs a cleaner design in order to eliminate the confusion that came along with trying to use the app. The meat is there, but even a quick walkthrough would work wonders for it.
Another area where PumpkinFACE fell short was features. While the selection of patterns is broad and creative, the app lacks basic customizations like resizing patterns and saving your favorite patterns for later use. Even though the app “scans” your pumpkin photo and attempts to scale the size of the pattern accordingly, it isn’t always correct.
Also, PumpkinFACE allows you to email patterns from the app. Emails include your photo with the pattern overlay, as well as the basic black & white pattern in PDF format. While this is useful, it makes it almost impossible to use on large pumpkins. I’d love to see a cutting guide or a creative way to piece together multiple pieces of paper for larger patterns.
PumpkinFACE is available to download from the App Store for $0.99 and even though this is fairly inexpensive, I think users might be turned off by how confusing it is to use. As I mentioned before, the concept is spot-on and the app is a great source of patterns. However, PumpkinFACE needs a bit more work before it’s ready to conquer other apps in its niche.
