iPhone Video App Review by TheiPhoneAppReview.com
Ah, gift cards. Whether tailored to a specific retailer or given in the form of a flexible preloaded debit card, it’s the universal gift that allows you to buy what you want with someone else’s money. However, if you’re like me, these gift cards tend to find their way to a drawer where their balance remains unknown until it’s time to use them.
Concept and Functionality:
GoWallet has you covered when it comes to keeping track of gift cards. This handy app promises to give you the power to store, manage, and even purchase gift cards for yourself, your family, and your friends.
However, you’ll need to sign up for an account before you start using the app. You can do so either by connecting it with your Facebook account or by creating an account using your email, which we were very happy to see. Be wary of apps that require you to give them access to your Facebook account.
Once you’re in, it’s extremely easy to view a list of all of the gift cards you’ve entered into the app, as well as add any new gift cards you’ve acquired. GoWallet’s useful Wallet page does a great job of showing you the total value of your cards and even allows you to sort them by value and search for specific cards.
As far as adding a new card, you can scan your card’s QR code (if applicable) or enter the card type and number manually. Even if your gift card is from a specific retailer, chances are it’s included in GoWallet’s list of over 300 supported stores.
GoWallet even keeps track of your favorite retailers and displays applicable offers and deals, which is great for those who want to get the most for their money. Lastly, it’s incredibly easy to buy gift cards within the app. Perfect for last-minute gifts or the occasional “Just thinking of you”, GoWallet seems to have a bit of everything and is a truly well-rounded app.
Of all the things GoWallet is able to do, I found one feature to be missing. It seems like most gift cards don’t currently support real-time balance tracking. I don’t know this for sure, but I believe Amex is the only card that currently supports this feature. However, checking the balance manually isn’t all that difficult, so it’s not a big deal.
On a positive note, GoWallet offers the ability to pay in store with your gift card straight from the app. A word to the wise, though; be sure to keep the physical gift card with you just in case the retailer requires it.
For those who are worried about security, you can optionally set up a PIN number for the app. Personally I believe this should be a required measure and not something that’s optional and hidden in the settings menu.
GoWallet is available to download for free from the App Store and is definitely worth downloading even if you acquire only a couple gift cards per year.
The app is very easy to use and makes the daunting task of keeping track of gifted plastic infinitely easier.
GoWallet Mobile requires iOS 5.0 or later. Compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. This app is optimized for iPhone 5.
