iPad Game Review by TheiPhoneAppReview.com
If you’ve read other reviews of mine here on The iPhone App Review, you’ll note that I tend to gauge how difficult a game is to learn and master. The main reason why I do this is so you have a fairly good idea as to what you’re getting yourself into. Rarely do I come across a game where I’m struggling to get through the tutorial.
Valkyrie, developed by Bifrost Studios, is a challenging and graphically rich running game for iPhone and iPad. If there’s one thing I should tell you right off the bat, it’s that this game definitely isn’t for the faint of heart.
Concept and Gameplay:
In Valkyrie, you play the role of a being who is in charge of escorting warrior souls back to the hallowed land of Valhalla. This might sound like an easy task, but I can promise you that the opposite is very true.
In order to be a successful Valkyrie, you need to have lightning fast reflexes and eyes like a hawk. You might think I’m exaggerating just a wee bit, but this game moves pretty darn fast.
Upon starting Valkyrie’s tutorial, I figured that the game would be pretty simple and straightforward seeing as gameplay controls consist of swiping your finger on the screen to jump or slide and tapping your finger to activate your phaser. What I didn’t realize is that all of this happens in very rapid succession.
A Valkyrie’s job apparently isn’t a very easy one, so be prepared to get frustrated and discouraged while you’re learning how to play the game.
One thing I can promise you is that you’ll get used to playing Valkyrie. The tutorial definitely helps, but in the end it’s just repetitive practice that helps you get in the rhythm of the game.
Honestly, it’s actually very refreshing to see such a challenging game that isn’t catered to casual players.
Gameplay aside, Valkyrie includes amazing graphics and visuals that really help to immerse you in the forsaken and barren underworld of lost souls. While other endless running games tend to take place in a cramped environment with lots of distractions, this game seems very open and airy.
If you’re someone who doesn’t enjoy being bombarded with a hundred different pieces of scenery, you’ll definitely enjoy Valkyrie.
Also, Valkyrie features 10 different levels for you to traverse through. However, if you’re looking for a bit of practice or you want to try testing yourself, there’s a cool Endless Run mode that allows you to do just that. This is also a great way to kick back without worrying about finishing levels and getting a high score.
Valkyrie is available to download from the App Store for only $0.99 and is universally compatible with iPhone and iPad. Perfect for gamers who are looking for something that will test them to the limits, this is one game I can’t recommend enough.
Valkyrie is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. Requires iOS 4.0 or later. This app is optimized for iPhone 5. A small expedite fee was paid to speed up the publication of this review.
