iPhone App Review by TheiPhoneAppReview.com
Ski Park is an app by RagCat Games that allows users to build their dream mountain resorts. In addition to building impressive resort features, players are also sent on a dual-mission of finding hidden objects during each stage of the building process.
Features and Functionality:
Ski Park boasts of being the first game to combine the challenges of working as a city builder with the task of locating hidden treasures. Specifically, special visitors to your mountain resort may be carrying special in-game prizes. Visitors start to arrive at your mountain ski park shortly after you build your first ski lift, so planning on opening an appropriate number of hotels/chalets is essential to a smoothly operating mountain resort system.
As a bit of added fun, this imaginary ski park is situated within “sight” of famous actual buildings (like the Taj Mahal). Additionally, Ski Park users always have the option of upgrading any of their structures, or they can host events in order to bring a “profit” to their mountain resorts.
While I found the overall features of Ski Park to be fun, I felt like the operation of the app simply wasn’t as smooth as it could be. Several times my attempts to open the app were greeted with a “warning!” message instead being able to enter into the app as desired. While this start-up bug issue didn’t always occur, it happened frequently enough to be annoying.
Appearance and Layout:
The graphics of Ski Park are fairly typical for a building-themed app of its type, featuring cartoon-like images in over-the-top bright colors. Navigating through Ski Park was fairly simple to do, and the builder assistant who guides new users through the city planning process with helpful suggestions is definitely appreciated. While it takes a bit of time to figure out how to actually execute the building of new structures in your mountain resort, once that part is figured it out playing Ski Park is simple to understand.
Overall, the layout and graphics of Ski Park are definitely among the stronger selling points to this app. It’s easy to see that a lot of work went into making it very visually appealing and they succeeded quite well.
This is a free app, and for anyone who thrives on builder/planner games, Ski Park may seem like a great addition to his/her iOS device’s app library. However, the start-up bug, while not affecting gameplay, may easily hinder many users’ enjoyment of the game, leaving it difficult for me to recommend it as a “must-have” app. If the Ski Park developers can work out this issue with starting the app it would earn a much higher rating and be a significantly better game.
[Editor’s Note: this app is also available on the Android platform]
Ski Park: Create Your Own Mountain Resort iPhone app requires iOS 4.3 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad. This app is optimized for iPhone 5. A small expedite fee was paid to speed up the publication of this review.
