Create real websites with SimpleDifferent website builder
iPhone App Review by TheiPhoneAppReview.com
When we’re not writing stunningly crafted (In our not-so humble opinion!) iOS application reviews here at the iPhone App Review, we have a day job creating websites. Yes, we love us some web development, which means we feel we have a particularly strong grasp on the field of What-You-See-Is-What-You-Get editors.
We’ve noted a few of these on iOS recently, and today’s entry is certainly one to investigate. It’s called SimpleDifferent, from Simple Different Co Ltd, and if you’ve been looking for an easy way to fashion together a site using nothing but your favorite armchair companion, this app may be a good fit for you. You’ll find our full review below.
Concept and Functionality
If you’re not familiar with the initial concept of a WYSIWYG editor, allow us to do some explaining. Essentially, these kinds of suites allow you to edit a website, or create whole new ones, without knowing any of that messy HTML, CSS or PHP.
Instead, you can use simple drag and drop fields, as well as basic text entry, to create full sites—and never once opening a coding manual!
It’s an idealistic kind of thought, but thanks to apps like SimpleDifferent, it’s one we’re really starting to see emerge on the iPad and iPhone. The app gives you exactly what we’ve described, providing you with a set of tools to get the job done. You can add new pages, create custom text areas, edit colors, add photos, and even change the whole site scheme.
SimpleDifferent also happens to include a few items that we didn’t expect. For instance, you’ll get PayPal integration as well as Google Analytics tracking, which is a big deal to any serious website owner. All in all, it’s a solid experience—but we’re not finished here.
Design and Interface
When it comes to website creation, web design is crucial. And if the website you’re building looks old, out-dated and obsolete, you’re just not going to get the traffic you need. Sadly, SimpleDifferent seems to create these kinds of website almost exclusively. You can choose between a variety of color schemes but essentially a single layout. This layout is very pre-Web 2.0 inspired, and as professionals in the field, we find it ridiculously hard to recommend the end results here to any business owner who needs more than that.
The app is simple to use, but is it really worth it if your site looks like it came straight out of 1999? Of course to be fair, if all you’re looking for is a simple site that is easily put together, this app would work well for you.
Thankfully, you can snag SimpleDifferent for free with a subdomain URL. It’s a good deal if you’d like to see what the application has to offer, but aren’t ready to put any cash down on the line. Overall, we like a lot of the features that Simple Different is providing. But until those layouts have been improved, it’s still quite a hard sale.
SimpleDifferent requires iOS 3.2 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. This app is optimized for iPhone 5. A small expedite fee was paid to speed up the publication of this review.
