If you’ve read my previous reviews, you’ll know I’m a huge fan of math apps and games. Even though I’m not a math pro, I still like to play math games every now and then to try and practice.
Concept and Gameplay:
Even if math isn’t your thing, it’s a good idea to try and keep your mind sharp when it comes to numbers. MathTower is a really cool new twist on the typical math game, flexing your brain while staying light on rules.
The concept is to simply match tiles together in order to create an equation. All tiles need to add up to the last number and if you match them successfully, the tiles disappear and you earn points.
If there’s a game I can think of to compare to MathTower, it’d probably be Tetris. Minus the cool shapes, of course. You can’t take too much time to create equations, though, because you’re racing against the clock.
Once you fulfill your point requirement for a level, you can progress to the next one. In all, there are ten levels to work your way through, and each gets progressively harder.
MathTower also includes an optional tutorial which does an exceptional job at walking new players through the game. Personally I didn’t have any trouble adjusting to the game, and I think it’s a really great concept that will get both kids and adults hooked in no time at all. It took me a little while to feel comfortable with creating longer equations, but I was surprised to see how much time didn’t really matter in a level. That’s not to say it can run out quickly if you’re not careful, but it’s not like other timed games where you have a big clock counting down on the screen.
MathTower is a pretty simple and straightforward game, but that doesn’t mean it lacks a few cool features. For example, you can choose which difficulty level you’d like to play at, but unlike other games, difficulty doesn’t change your tile numbers. Instead, it controls the amount of time you get for each level.
My favorite MathTower feature definitely has to be the ability to resume a game that’s in progress. Levels tend to take quite a bit of time to complete, so this is definitely a plus. I can’t begin to explain how many times it came in handy for me while I was playing.
MathTower is available to download from the App Store for $0.99 for a limited time to celebrate the launch of the game. Normally it’s priced at $1.99, so be sure to download this exceptional math game while it’s on sale! There are also more features on the way, including multiplayer and more levels.
