Brick Breaker Warz
iPhone Game Review by TheiPhoneAppReview.com
If you’re new to our site, let us be the first to tell you: We have a Death Star fatal vent sized weakness for all things arcade gaming. We can’t get enough of any high score pumping monstrosity, which is why we’re pretty well sold on the concepts behind Brick Breaker Warz’ retro blasting action.
The app, from Zurf Games, is a refreshing take on not one but two golden oldies, and if you’re into it, the end results can be really quite marvelous. For our full review of the title, you need only to slide on down below the break as well! Starting with:
Concept and Gameplay
The basic idea behind Brick Breaker Warz looks something like that commercial where the chocolate got into the peanut butter—only this time, it’s Pong and Brick Breaker that have been thrown in together.
You’ll be battling it out against another opponent, the both of you spinning wildly to wave your pong paddles into position. What position is that? Well, whatever spot makes contact with the brick breaker ball that is actively smashing up the wall between you and your opponent. What happens when that wall goes away? You get to play Pong!
That may sound a bit cheesy, but then again, it is. However, we’re hardly complaining.
It’s a frantic and exciting sort of game, and the kind that works incredibly well with another person. We haven’t had this much fun playing an arcade game from opposite ends of our iPhone in a long time.
Design and Graphics
On the one hand, we love the way that Brick Breaker Warz looks. It’s incredibly retro, and reminds us of all the good old days when we used to play these sorts of games on consoles that would now make younger folks cringe. In other words, it’s a great romp down memory lane.
But on the other hand, we’d like to see a few additions. For instance, we liked the cool power ups, like being able to blast your opponents paddle with a rocket. But we’d like to do this against a computer opponent if we’ve got nobody around. We’d also like to see a few changes in the graphics, mostly within the sprite animations. There’s a difference between bad and retro, and though this game is 99% retro, there are a few loose elements yet to clean up.
All of that can be as it may, though, because Brick Breaker Warz is a great game. It’s a fun retro arcade title, and if you’ve been looking for one of the freshest ways yet to revitalize Brick Breaker, this is it.
The game is tight, fun to play, and of course a good way to make new friends. With all of that in mind, it’s an easy recommendation from us.
Brick Breaker Warz requires iOS 5.1 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. This app is optimized for iPhone 5. A small expedite fee was paid to speed up the publication of this review.
