iPhone App Review by TheiPhoneAppReview.com
WordCHILL, by developer BaugsTo, is a new app for iOS. With a strong emphasis on word and letter board game fun, this app looks to appeal to Scrabble lovers everywhere! Can it hold a candle to the original classic game? Let’s take a look!
WordCHILL offers you multiplayer fun against one to three other player. Simply load it up, create an account (easy, one step, no verification needed process), and then browse through the tutorial. Next, you’ll get to go head-to-head against other players, using your Friends list, Contacts list, or Search. Search allows you to look for opponents via username or email address.
It’s best if you actually have a friend who plays this game, so you will have ready opponent. Otherwise, it is not easy to find people to play against online. An online list of players ready to play would be a nice addition.
Next, you get to jump into the game! In WordCHILL, each player has a set of letters. They must use their letters, in turns, to form words on the game board. However, it’s not a simple box screen. Instead, each board can take all sorts of interesting sizes and shapes, based on the preset difficulty.
Board dimensions can also be set, from 4×4 to 8×8. That’s it! You and your opponent will attempt to form as many words as possible, and score as highly as possible while using up as many of your letters as you can. Interestingly, you and your opponent(s) (up to 3) will be using same letter but on different boards of same shape! It’s a fairly fun game and works similarly to Scrabble, in a slightly different form.
Game graphics in WordCHILL are pretty nice. They look professional and allow the user to get comfortable with the board game style layout.
There is a nice intro tutorial users can access from the start if they are wanting a intro to the app. This intro consists of several slides with info on the main game. The actual game board looks quite sharp and allows for you to feel like you really are laying down tiles on a tabletop.
WordCHILL is a fairly fun game. It sports nice graphics, a solid layout, good game play and a lot of game options. Fans of Scrabble and other word games will undoubtedly feel at home with WordCHILL. The matchmaking system for players leaves something to be desired, but it does offer a ‘random’ matching system that is useful. If you and a friend want a nice Scrabble alternative, for free, we think you’ll do well to tackle WordCHILL.
WordCHILL requires iOS 5.1 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad. This app is optimized for iPhone 5. A small expedite fee was paid to speed up the publication of this review.
