iPad Game Review by TheiPhoneAppReview.com
Here at the iPhone App Review, we quite like a good arcade game. In fact, anything that provides us with an opportunity to boost our high scores, try our skills out, and comes with a new concept is a friend of ours. With that in mind, we’re quite pleased to be bringing you a review of Wealthy Hog today. The app is certainly outside the norm—in a good way—in that it arrives at our doorstep with a fresh mechanic that’s two-parts pub inspired and one part get-out-of-jail card. If that sounds like an engaging mix, then scroll on down below the break to view our whole review of the app now.
Concept and Gameplay
The core concept behind Wealthy Hog is actually quite simple, though you may not get a good handle on it just by looking at the beastie. For instance, most of the “plot” of the game revolves around trying to rid oneself of debt. You’ll do this by flicking coins across a wooden plank and into a piggy bank. This must be done in a sort of Blackjack fashion, as the total combination of coins flicked and landed must equal the sum provided at the top of the screen. If you go over, you’ll lose. And if you go under, well, you’ll just keep flicking, won’t you?
It’s great fun, and the developers have made some real effort to keep the lot of it exciting. For instance, there’s a gaping hole in the middle of the board that must be avoided, or else you’ll be penalized a coin slot temporarily. You must also complete the level before your timer runs out. And lastly, various powerups and anti-powerups will float around across the board.
All in all, it’s a solid combination, and a fresh take on iPhone gaming that we haven’t seen before.
Design and Interface
That being said, we still have some concerns with the games overall replay ability. As mentioned, the devs have obviously considered this angle. Still, we’re just not sure it’s enough. The app’s central mechanic—the swiping—does not change throughout the game, and after so many matches of Wealthy Hog, it just doesn’t quite hold our interest as well. Still, the draw to best your own pot and win bigger and bigger is there. However, this may not be enough for all of our readers.
That being said, you hardly have to be a well-off piece of pork to play Wealthy Hog. The app will only cost you a dollar in the App Store, which is a tremendous bargain. With this at the helm, Wealthy Hog is a great value, and though it may not be a permanent resident on your iPhone, it’s still certainly fun.
Wealthy Hog requires iOS 4.3 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. This app is optimized for iPhone 5. A small expedite fee was paid to speed up the publication of this review.
