ABC Games for Pre-K – Montessori Phonics-enabled Alphabet HD
iPad App Review by TheiPhoneAppReview.com
Kids are like sponges when it comes to learning. Therefore, it’s best to make sure they’re learning correctly by providing them with the best tools possible so learning is fun and exciting. ABC Games for Pre-K, developed by Kids Academy Company, is a super fun way for youngsters to learn all about the alphabet. If you are the parent of a young child who is just starting to learn how to recognize letters and words, this is definitely an app to check out.
Concept and Functionality:
ABC Games for Pre-K is an awesome universal app that uses the Montessori method of teaching. For those who aren’t familiar with the Montessori education method, this particular program emphasizes freedom of choice by the child instead of an education that’s set in stone. You can read more about the Montessori method on Wikipedia.
ABC Games for Pre-K is extremely easy to navigate and understand, making it perfect for very young children who are just starting to learn the alphabet. I found that the app was intuitive but first time users might have trouble figuring out how to actually start playing games. Once the start button is pressed, kids can freely choose from 26 blocks (each representing a letter of the alphabet) and begin playing.
However, it’s not really “playing” in the game sense. Instead, kids can tap on different objects that start with a certain letter. A male or female speaker then pronounces the word and a cute animation will play. While this can be exciting, I was disappointed to see that a key activity such as learning to write letters needed to be unlocked via in-app purchase.
Though light on features (therefore keeping it simple for youngsters to use), ABC Games for Pre-K does include a useful progress tracker for parents. This allows parents to see how many times their child viewed each letter. Data is displayed in bar chart form, making it easy to see which letters have received the most practice and letters that might need to be visited a bit more.
Also, you can create and edit profiles for each child who will be using the app. This includes a photo, name, and whether the child is left or right handed. Kids love when something feels like it’s theirs, so this profile feature is perfect. Plus it makes the progress tracker even better.
ABC Games for Pre-K can be downloaded from the App Store for $2.99 and is universally compatible with iPhone and iPad. As I mentioned before, the tracing feature has to be unlocked for an additional $2.99. Personally I think that tracing should be an included feature and not an unlocked upgrade. The app itself is well designed, though, and is worth the price if you’re looking for a great educational app for kids ages 2-5.
ABC Games for Pre-K is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. Requires iOS 4.3 or later. This app is optimized for iPhone 5. A small expedite fee was paid to speed up the publication of this review.
