PocketEarth Offline Maps & Travel Guides
iPhone App Review by TheiPhoneAppReview.com
PocketEarth Offline Maps & Travel Guides by GeoMagik LLC is billed as the perfect app for the avid traveler. Ideal for anyone who needs to navigate new cities without using up a data plan, Pocket Earth provides iOS users with all information that they could possibly need in order to find their way around.
PocketEarth features comprehensive worldwide maps and travel guides that can be accessed offline. Featuring map and travel guide content from crowdsourced resources, this app taps into the rich community of community-contributed projects. In addition to providing users with comprehensive maps, this app also brings users Wikipedia articles (over 500,000) to keep them informed on the non-map details of their journeys.
Other features of PocketEarth include multi-stop online routing with exact directions, seven languages, and GPS track recording. While PocketEarth is mostly aimed at worldwide travelers, its map features should also be of great use to anyone who enjoys planning out cycling, running, or hiking routes.
Appearance and Layout:
Pocket Earth promises to provide users with a beautiful interface and graphics, and it certainly delivers on this promise. Pocket Earth’s maps are easy to roam and load very quickly, making this app ideal for looking up information on-the-go. Navigating through the app to find exact map details is also pretty simple to do, and even the “Pocket Earth” icon is aesthetically pleasing.
While some might be concerned that viewing detailed map information on small iOS screens would compromise the appearance of those maps, PocketEarth features high resolution support that allows each map to be crisply displayed even on small screens. Overall, I was extremely impressed with the appearance and layout of this app, as both factors allowed for easy navigating through new cities.
At $2.99, PocketEarth is somewhat more expensive than most other apps. However, the wealth of information stored in Pocket Earth is more than worth this fee. PocketEarth is an app that doesn’t overpromise its features; instead, this app really is as good as it is touted to be.
If you’re an avid traveler and in need of quick access to worldwide maps without needing to use your data plan, then PocketEarth is a great addition to your app collection. However, since this app uses up about 6MB of data, users may have to clear some space for it on their iOS devices prior to being able to fully utilize it.
PocketEarth Offline Maps & Travel Guides iPhone app requires iOS 5.0 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
