iPhone App Review by TheiPhoneAppReview.com
homesickFM, a music app by Nico Schmidt, brings iOS users the radio stations of their home cities at the touch of their fingertips. homesickFM can be used for free for one city, but adding additional cities can only be done for a minor fee ($0.99).
This app’s features are really exactly what its name indicates; homesickFM allows iOS users to access the local radio stations of a major city, even without an iOS user being in that city. The cities featured on homesickFM are worldwide, with just about every major city between Amberstam and Seattle available.
The latest version of homesickFM even includes even more city options than the original version did. However, since this app features only major cities, anyone from a small town probably will not be able to really enjoy this app to the same extent that those from any of the represented areas can.
Finding stations in your chosen city can be done by either skipping from station to station or by doing “old school” scrolling with the virtual radio dial. homesickFM’s features also include the ability to personalize the radio dial, similar to how one would program a car stereo system. If users want to enjoy the radio stations of more than one city, purchasing the “all cities” package is an option for less than a dollar (plus tax).
Appearance and Layout:
The appearance and layout of this app can best be described as “minimalist.” Its user interface is extremely simple, in an apparent attempt to mimic the appearance of an actual radio dial. Overall, this attempt successfully does just that, and this minimalist style makes it extremely easy to use the first time.
While homesickFM certainly doesn’t have extremely impressive graphics, such graphics really are not needed at all. homesickFM’s layout makes perfect sense for serving its intended purpose.
homesickFM is a great app for the homesick radio lover. However, there are definitely a limited number of radio station cities to choose from, and anyone not from one of these major cities might be a bit disappointed. Nonetheless, homesickFM is still an app that is well-designed and will appeal to anyone looking for an easy-to-use radio-focused app.
