iPhone App Review by TheiPhoneAppReview.com
There’s one good reason why we like the iPhone (and iOS) so dang much, and it’s this: The platform allows us to do so much with our lives, especially if you’re a professional of any degree. Today’s occupation, though, is that of the ye olden contractor. The app designed to help such a pro out? Why, it’s called Compound by developer Gary Simpson. The app makes it incredibly simple to get the precise angles you need to cut absolutely perfect compound miters every time—and we really mean that. If you deal with moulding all day long, this app has the potential to wholly revitalize the way you work. And at a fair price to boot! For our full review, you need only to slide on down below the break.
Concept and Functionality
As with most apps we see aimed at contractors, Compound performs a very specific function, and does it with a whole lot of grace. To begin with, the idea behind the app is relatively straightforward: It allows you to put in the spring angle for your crown molding (the angle formed by the vertical) and the corner angle (the one formed by the corner to the miter). Once that’s done, the app churns and chugs, returning with the precise tilt and pitch at which you need to crank your miter saw to get incredibly accurate results.
We really aren’t kidding about the accuracy, here. The best part is that Compound will even give you a direct, visual representation of how you should tilt the saw to get the needed cuts. In this way, so long as you measure correctly on the front-end, we’d find it damn hard to screw up your next big project.
Design and Interface
With these sorts of applications, the interface is usually a bit lackluster. Either that, or it’s studded with lots of metal textures and manly flames. However, Compound shies away from all of this. The app is stunningly minimalist, offering only those tit-bits that you need when you need them. Furthermore, this makes it incredibly efficient for when you need to hurry along with a project. If you’re running behind on your deadline, you certainly won’t be held up by this gorgeous designed, incredibly good-looking application.
We’ll put it to you this way: If you have a need for a quick way to calculate miter cuts while on the go, Compound is a no-brainer. Whether you’re a contractor or just a week-end house repair warrior, you’ll get a lot for your money with this app. It costs only three bucks in the App Store, and considering that price will earn you precise and perfect cuts, we can hardly think of a better deal. Compound is an easy recommendation to those in need.
Compound requires iOS 5.0 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. A small expedite fee was paid to speed up the publication of this review. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
