I don’t know about you, but as a kid I was terrified of the quietest sounds at night. Every creak, every bump, and every squeak would completely freak me out. Heck, even as an adult I still feel the same way on spooky nights. Luckily there’s an app that should help this common fear.

Anti-Monster Bedtime Spray, developed by Caleb Grove, is an entertaining app for iPhone that will hopefully help your child overcome their fear of nighttime monsters.

Concept and Gameplay:

I have to admit that I really got a laugh out of the title of this app. Anti-Monster Bedtime Spray aims to provide your child with an entertaining and fun way to conquer nighttime creepers. While we unfortunately lack the ability (and technology) to create an actual anti-monster spray, it’s still a blast to pretend! To play, your child must select a spray color, then adequately use the spray on the in-game bedroom. Once the bedroom is sufficiently covered in spray, monsters will appear and will run if they came in contact with the spray.

Ultimately, the goal of Anti-Monster Bedtime Spray is to help your child find humor in eradicating monsters, therefore relieving their fear of them in their own bedroom. The app is pretty detailed as far as graphics and sound effects, making the extermination process even more entertaining. If your child successfully repels all of the monsters, they’ll see a cool superhero pop up at the end.

There’s only one thing that concerns me about Anti-Monster Bedtime Spray, which is the fact that the app requests permission to access your location. This is something that’s definitely not needed for the app to function properly. I couldn’t find any information about what location data is used for, either, so I definitely recommend that you don’t allow the app to access your location.

Anti-Monster Bedtime Spray is pretty simple to play, which can be both good and bad. Unfortunately many of the cool features like flamethrowers and using your child’s photo as the face of the superhero need to be unlocked via in-app purchase. However, kids can still have fun without purchasing upgrades.

As far as improvements, Anti-Monster Bedtime Spray could definitely use a few more features that would make it a bit more fun to play. For example, I definitely think a change in scenery would be nice. What I mean by that is the ability to choose between different bedrooms or even the ability to create your own custom bedroom.

Value:

Anti-Monster Bedtime Spray is available to download for free from the App Store and comes with plenty of optional in-app purchases and upgrades. These purchases range from unlocking a flamethrower to being able to use your child’s picture for the superhero animation at the end of a successful round.

While the app is a cool idea, I think it needs a little more work as far as making it more fun to play. Also, the geolocation issue is something that definitely needs to be addressed as far as what it’s used for.
