One thing I’ve noticed in all my years of browsing the App Store is that apps in foreign languages don’t get a lot of love. This can be difficult for users in the US who are trying to study a new language and are looking for an app that would help them do that, along with people who want apps in their native tongue.

500 Russian Audiobooks, developed by NEWINTECH, is a new app that brings a ton of audiobooks to your device for the price of just one. From education to humor, every genre is available to listen to.

Concept and Functionality:

It’s hard to imagine an app that offers 500 full-length audiobooks for the price of a cup of coffee, but 500 Russian Audiobooks is true to its name. Whether you’re in the mood for humor, you’re looking for a free English lesson, or you’re looking to practice Russian, there’s definitely something for everyone to listen to. Be aware, though, that everything is in Russian. This includes menus and book titles.

Something that I find incredibly important in an app that offers books or other media is organization, and 500 Russian Audiobooks really excels. From checking out the latest books in the catalog to seeing what’s popular, it’s extremely easy to browse books. If you know what you’re looking for, you can easily search for authors or specific titles.

Once you’re selected a book to listen to, it’s added to the “My Books” section of the app where you can download it to your device when you’re ready to listen. Naturally longer books will take more time to download, and if you close the app they’ll continue to download in the background. If the book you’re listening to has individual chapters, you can see them in the audio player. From what I could tell while listening to a few books, narration was clear and understandable.

Features:

500 Russian Audiobooks has quite a few features that make it a great app. First, it functions just like a music player by continuing to play a book in the background if you switch to another app. Also, books don’t download automatically when you add them to your list. Though this might sound like a drawback, it’s actually useful because you can add books you’d like to listen to without worrying about downloading them all at once. Instead, you can download them individually.

As far as features I’d like to see in future updates, I feel there should be at least have an English option for book catalogs. The audio doesn’t necessarily have to be in English (as that would pretty much defeat the whole purpose of the app), but I believe it would make finding books easier if folks who are studying Russian could search for them by their English title.

Value:

500 Russian Audiobooks can be downloaded from the App Store for $3.99 and is universally compatible with iPhone and iPad. Whether you’re a student who is studying Russian or you’re fluent and you’re looking for great books to listen to, this app is definitely worth the price!
