CamFind: Written & Video iPhone App Review
One of the perks of this job is that we get to see all kinds of new innovations and ideas for the iOS platform as they emerge. In fact, we might go so far as to call ourselves “cutting edge.” With that in mind, we’re just chuffed to bits to introduce you to one of our favorite new concepts. It’s called CamFind, from Image Searcher, and it’s a free app that’s perhaps the best way search for just about anything using your iPhone—and just its camera. Yes, you heard that right. By taking a photo, you can find information on almost anything, and in a pinch, at that. For more information, you need only to slide on down to our full review below. Starting with:
Concept and Functionality
If you have ever used the app Google Goggles, then you likely already have an handle on how CamFind behaves—though we promise the concept presented here is even deeper than the original. Essentially, the app boils down to pulling out your phone, booting up CamFind, and then pointing it at something in which you’re interested. Let the app take a photo, and then it’ll send that sweet pic up to the Internet for consideration. When it returns, it’ll tell you all you need to know about the product, movie poster, actor, QR code, and honestly just about anything else you can think of. We had one heck of a time walking around the house and neighborhood pointing our phone at things, then seeing what CamFind could . . . well, find.
All in all, it’s a stellar locally-based way to get more info about the world around you. And as mentioned, it happens to work a bit better and dive a bit deeper than anything else we’ve seen before.
Design and Interface
The real saving grace where CamFind is concerned is in its simplicity. The app is bloody simple, which makes it incredibly easy to whip out for a quick photo. For instance, the app’s large, spacious buttons makes it a breeze to pull it out while waiting on a street corner, snap the advert on a passing bus, and then get all the data you need.
The results list is a bit bland, but not necessarily in a negative way: Its stark black interface keeps things easy to read, and well organized, too. All in all, it’s just hard to find anything wrong with what CamFind is packing.
As a free app in the App Store, CamFind is truly a one-of-a-kind value. Go ahead and snag it, then give it about ten minutes of play time. If you don’t find something cool to snap in your home, then delete it with nothing lost. Take our word for it, though: You’ll leave it on your homescreen, we guarantee it.
CamFind requires iOS 6.0 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. A small expedite fee was paid to speed up the publication of this review, as well as a video production fee.
