ASCII Shooter: Video and Written iPad Game Review
When you think of great iPad games, normally stunning graphics and immense plots come to mind. What about games that tip their hat to the oldies but goodies? You know, those games that had us glued to old NES controllers and rocking out to 8-bit soundtracks.
ASCII Shooter, developed by iCartel, is a new 2D shooter for iPad and iPhone that will definitely bring back memories. Though its simple design might trick you into thinking it’s an easy game to play, you’re in for a surprise!
Concept and Gameplay:
ASCII Shooter aims to bring classic retro gaming to high-tech devices such as the iPhone and the iPad. As someone who grew up playing games like this, I love it when games are able to instill a sense of nostalgia. The concept of ASCII Shooter is simple; play the role of defender and fight off the attacking virus. To control your defender, you use classic control pads to move your defender around the screen and shoot the bad guys. The left control pad is for movement, and the right control pad allows you to shoot bullets and bombs in all directions.
For those of you who have read other game reviews of mine, you might be aware of the fact that I’m a huge fan of games that allow adjustable difficulty levels. ASCII Shooter has five difficulty settings: Rookie, Peacemaker, Common User, Programmer, and Nerdminator.
As far as overall thoughts on graphics and gameplay, I was surprised at how easy it was to learn how to play ASCII Shooter. However, I found that it took a while to get used to the controls because your defender wouldn’t always move and/or shoot in the direction you intended. This is more a matter of getting used to the game, though.
Seeing as ASCII Shooter is a retro game, classic graphics and sound effects are definitely a must. I’m really happy to say that the game will make your iDevice feel less like modern technology and more like an old Nintendo. The game is definitely spot on with regards to overall feel and appearance.
Also, ASCII Shooter features hundreds of levels and thousands of enemies to destroy. One of the coolest things I discovered about the game is that hardware layouts that you play on our true to design. Though this probably isn’t something you’d recognize immediately, it’s pretty cool to know the amount of detail that was put into creating the game. Lastly, ASCII Shooter easily allows you to continue ongoing games without having to start all the way back at the beginning.
ASCII Shooter is available to download from the App Store for only $0.99. Also, the game is universally compatible with both iPad and iPhone. If you’re looking for a great game that’ll definitely bring back memories, I can’t recommend ASCII Shooter enough!
ASCII Shooter is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. Requires iOS 4.3 or later. This app is optimized for iPhone 5. A small expedite fee was paid to speed up the publication of this review, as well as a video production fee.
