Patient Whiz: Written iPhone App Review
Medical information can be one of the most difficult things anyone will deal with. From stacks of paperwork to lengthy instructions from doctors, it’s easy to become overwhelmed with information. If you’re looking to take charge of personal health, this is the perfect app for the job.
Patient Whiz, developed by Ann Maria Hester,MD, is designed to help individuals stay on top of their medical records while helping to teach good habits on preventative medicine and other medical necessities.
Concept and Functionality:
Patient Whiz was developed by a medical expert, author, and patient advocate, and the expertise definitely shows. It’s extremely easy to create a user account and start using the app. Basically the app functions as a medical logbook, allowing you to create individual entries by filling out forms specific to that topic or condition.
Occasionally medical apps tend to mirror the confusion and complexity of the very documents they attempt to simplify, but Patient Whiz isn’t one of them. Everything is available in chapter format on the main screen so you can quickly and easily locate whatever you need. From general health information such as allergies, family history, and hospitalizations to preventative medicine, you can keep track of almost anything in the app.
Patient Whiz can function as more than just a written logbook, however, by providing you with the capability to scan documents and even record voice notes. This is perfect for patients who want to record everything that took place in the doctor’s office or hospital quickly and easily. You can even ask your doctor to record voice notes for you, almost eliminating any risk of miscommunication or confusion.
Patient Whiz is definitely one of the most feature packed medical apps I’ve ever seen. Along with the ability to record voice notes and scan documents, you can also set up reminders for doctors appointments so you minimize the risk of forgetting you next checkup. The audible reminder sends you a notification one hour prior to your appointment. While this is definitely handy, I do wish there were more options to customize reminders such as being able to set it up to a week in advance.
Another great feature Patient Whiz offers is unbelievable detail and expertise regarding questions that physicians typically ask. Checklists and questions within the app help you prepare for an appointment or emergency visit by allowing you to log symptoms, conditions, and other factors prior to your arrival.
Lastly, Patient Whiz strives to teach users how to have complete control over their health and medical care. While the app might seem overwhelmingly complex and difficult to understand at first, I can almost guarantee you’ll know the ins and outs of it in no time. All it takes is a little patience and the willingness to commit to taking care of yourself as if you were your own doctor.
Patient Whiz is available to download from the App Store for $4.99. Though this may seem high, the features it provides and the usefulness of the app are worth it. Plus, Patient Whiz is universally compatible with both iPhone and iPad. If you’ve ever wanted an app that will allow you to have complete control over your personal health, Patient Whiz is perfect for you.
Patient Whiz is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. Requires iOS 5.1 or later. A small expedite fee was paid to speed up the publication of this review.
