OnTop Direct Debit & Bill Manager: Written iPhone App Review
If there’s something we can all agree on, it’s the fact that bills aren’t fun to deal with. Unfortunately in most cases they don’t pay themselves, which is why it’s imperative to keep track of all financial obligations.
Concept and Functionality:
From the start, it’s obvious that OnTop was designed for optimal organization and ease-of-use. The Home screen allows you to see when your bills are due along with days you get paid. You can view bills due in a week, two weeks (fortnight), and month.
The process of adding bills to OnTop is pretty simple. To create a new entry, simply enter the bill’s name, choose an icon that represents it, and enter information such as payment type, amount, and due date. You can also specify whether or not the bill is recurring, as well as if you’d like to receive an on the date the bill is due or the day before.
Once you’ve entered bill information into OnTop, you can use the built-in calendar to see when various types of bills are due. This is perfect for users who don’t want to be surprised. You can also access online accounts using stored login information if you choose, which is mentioned further in the Features section of this review.
As I just mentioned, OnTop also allows you to store account login information for services that require it. While this is helpful in preventing you from forgetting account credentials, it’s extremely risky to provide such information because there’s no way to secure it within the app. It would be much safer if there was an option to put a passcode on the app.
Also, though the alarm function is handy, I feel it doesn’t provide enough customization. Some bills can’t be paid on the day they’re due because of bank processing times and others can only be paid by check, which takes even more time. Therefore, I definitely suggest adding more reminder features.
The lack of security and customizable reminders in OnTop make for a huge drawback. After all, the whole idea of a bill management app is to help us stay current with bills so we can plan our finances accordingly. Therefore, the app should instead encourage us to pay our bills ahead of time instead of paying on the day they’re due.
OnTop direct debit bill manager is available to download from the App Store for $1.99, which is in too steep given what the app can do. Hopefully the aforementioned feature suggestions will be added in the near future. Overall the value is certainly there as long as you feel your iPhone itself is secure enough.
OnTop Direct Debit & Bill Manager is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. Requires iOS 4.0 or later. This app is optimized for iPhone 5. A small expedite fee was paid to speed up the publication of this review.
