Fat Slice: Written iPad Game Review
Something I’ve noticed about iOS games is they tend to be very serious. It’s all about great design, a killer storyline or concept, and audio perfection. Everyone enjoys a good laugh, though, and any app or game that adds a heavy dose humor and wit is often more enjoyable to play.
Concept and Gameplay:
If there was ever a game that was perfect for touchscreens, Fat Slice is it. The object of the game is to slice each shape until the shape’s area bar reaches the white flag marker. Naturally you want to do this in as few slices as possible. Once you’ve sliced the given shape up to the point where you’ve reached the white flag, your score is calculated based on the percentage of area left and the number of slices taken from the shape.
One of the things I love the most about Fat Slice is how creative it is. Instead of a separate tutorial, you learn how to play the game as you go along thanks to helpful words of advice in the shapes themselves. Plus there’s the occasional entertaining blurb or witty comment, which keeps things fun.
Don’t let this trick you into thinking Fat Slice is an easy game, though. As you progress through shapes, they become harder to slice thanks to strategically placed unsliceable walls. Not only that, but there are also bouncing balls that must not be sliced off.
One of the best features Fat Slice offers is a quick and easy way to see how you performed on each shape, right from the main screen. Each shape has a number next to is, which is how many slices it took to complete it. I love games that push you to improve scores, which is why this small detail is one of my favorites.
Another neat feature is cumulative points. As you continue to play and improve your score on past shapes, your total score will increase. Fat Slice features Game Center integration as well, so you can challenge your friends and show off your super awesome slicing skills.
Lastly, Fat Slice definitely has the potential to add more shapes to cut up. I always try to see whether a game can add more levels in future updates, especially for games you can complete rather quickly if you’re addicted to playing them.
Fat Slice can be downloaded from the App Store for $0.99 and is universally compatible with both iPad and iPhone. It’s a very addicting game to play, and I definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a fun and challenging game to pass the time.
Fat Slice is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. Requires iOS 4.3 or later. This app is optimized for iPhone 5. A small expedite fee was paid to speed up the publication of this review.
