CryFace: Written & Video iPhone App Review
(Promo Code Giveaway! See below for free promo codes)
Here at the iPhone App Review, we like a certain group of genres. That is to say, we have our favorites, and we have a fairly giddy day an app in any one set wanders across our desk. With that in mind, we like novelty applications a lot, and today’s offering—CryFace by developer Tav Shande—is a fine example of how to go about creating a good one! The app takes regular photos of your mug (or your mates’) and adds some tear-stained misery on top of them. It’s a good time out, despite the crying, and if you’re looking for our full review, you find it tucked away below, just beyond the break!
Concept and Functionality
As stated, the idea behind CryFace is quite simple, and quite a lot of fun. The app allows you to firstly snap a smart photo of your face using the front-facing camera. As you do so, you’ll need to line up your features with the indicators on the screen. Do so well, and then take that picture.
The app then pulls the image, processes it, and allows you to tweak its facial recognition areas. These were actually pretty incredibly precise in our experience, but if you need to do some fine-tuning, you can with ease. From there, the app does all of the hard work! It’ll peel away, then return with a pre-made version of your newly tear-stained face. You can immediately save this new photo to your phone or social network of choice, or you can choose another option from one of the several included here. All of these filters are hilarious (we assure you) and you’ll hardly go wrong with any of them. Overall, it’s a fantastic time out, and we appreciated how little work was required on our parts.
Graphics and Layout
On the whole, CryFace is a pretty good looking application. It’s got a great interface that’s well laid out with a bevy of pleasant textures. We had no trouble at all guiding our way through the controls, nor setting up our shots. We didn’t even have to adjust the facial recognition tuners in 99% of all our attempts. All of this simply to say that though CryFace may not be winning any awards for its design, it’s hardly a bad one: You’ll not notice the trees for the forest of fun you’ll be having, we can assure you.
In fact, the only real downside to the application is its price tag. It’s a solid two bucks in the App Store, which is exactly one dollar more than we might like. We know, it’s a bit picky. But for a novelty app that you’ll only get so many uses out of, we would simply feel more comfortable with it resting in the below-a–dollar range. Still, it’s a lot of fun, and it’s hardly a bank-breaker. CryFace easily comes recommended.
